Important safety precautions

This section of the Kia EV6 owner’s manual contains important safety precautions, recommendations, and occupant protection information designed to improve overall driving safety.

The Kia EV6 safety recommendations provided throughout this section are among the most important vehicle safety guidelines and should always be followed carefully.

Always wear your seat belt

Seat belts provide the primary level of protection during nearly all types of collisions and emergency driving situations.

Although the Kia EV6 is equipped with advanced air bag systems, air bags are designed to supplement seat belts rather than replace them.

For maximum protection, always ensure that both the Kia EV6 driver and all passengers wear their seat belts properly whenever the vehicle is in motion.

Restrain all children

All children under 13 years of age should ride properly restrained in the rear seats of the Kia EV6 whenever possible, rather than in the front passenger seat.

Infants and young children should always use an appropriate child restraint system designed for their size and weight.

Larger children should continue using a booster seat together with the lap/shoulder belt until they can wear the Kia EV6 seat belt properly without additional support.

Proper child restraint use significantly reduces the risk of injury during sudden braking or collisions.

Air bag hazards

Although air bags in the Kia EV6 can help save lives during certain accidents, they may also cause serious or fatal injuries if occupants sit too close to them or are not restrained correctly.

Infants, small children, and shorter adults are at greater risk of injury from deploying air bags.

Always follow all Kia EV6 air bag safety instructions, seating recommendations, and warning labels contained within this owner’s manual.

Driver distraction

Driver distraction represents one of the most serious and potentially dangerous risks while operating the Kia EV6, especially for inexperienced drivers.

Safe driving must always remain the driver’s highest priority. Drivers should remain aware of potential distractions including drowsiness, reaching for objects, eating, personal grooming, conversations with passengers, and mobile device usage.

Drivers become distracted whenever their eyes leave the road, their hands leave the steering wheel, or their attention shifts away from driving tasks.

To reduce the risk of distraction and possible accidents while driving the Kia EV6:

  • ALWAYS configure mobile devices such as smartphones, navigation systems, MP3 players, or infotainment settings only while the Kia EV6 is parked safely.

  • ONLY use mobile devices when permitted by local laws and when road conditions allow safe operation.

NEVER text, type messages, or send emails while driving the Kia EV6.

Many states, regions, and cities prohibit texting or handheld phone use while driving.

  • NEVER allow mobile device usage or infotainment interaction to distract you from safe Kia EV6 operation.

You are responsible for maintaining full control of the vehicle with both hands available for steering and your attention focused on surrounding traffic conditions.

Control your speed

Excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of serious injuries and traffic fatalities.

In general, the faster a vehicle travels, the greater the likelihood and severity of collision-related injuries.

However, even lower-speed collisions involving the Kia EV6 can still result in serious injury depending on road conditions and impact circumstances.

Never drive faster than is safe for current weather, traffic, visibility, or road conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.

Keep your vehicle in safe condition

A tire failure, low tire pressure, or mechanical malfunction can create dangerous driving situations and increase accident risk.

To help reduce the possibility of these problems, regularly inspect Kia EV6 tire condition and tire pressure and perform all recommended maintenance according to the scheduled service intervals.

Routine maintenance and inspections help maintain the safety, reliability, and long-term performance of the Kia EV6.

Periodic inspection

All seat belts in the Kia EV6 should be inspected on a regular basis for signs of wear, cuts, fraying, or other damage. Any damaged seat belt components or hardware should be replaced immediately to maintain maximum passenger safety.

Keep belts clean and dry

Seat belts should always be kept clean and dry to ensure proper operation and long-term durability. If the belts in your Kia EV6 become dirty, clean them using warm water and a mild soap solution. Harsh detergents, bleach, dyes, or abrasive cleaners should never be used because they may weaken the belt material and reduce overall safety performance.

When to replace seat belts

The complete seat belt assembly in the Kia EV6 should be replaced after the vehicle has been involved in an accident, even if no visible damage is present. Internal stress or hidden structural weakening may reduce the effectiveness of the restraint system. If you have additional questions regarding seat belt inspection, replacement, or operation, contact an authorized Kia dealer for professional assistance and inspection.

Automatic locking mode

Kia EV6 child restraint automatic locking mode overview

Under normal driving conditions, the passenger seat belts in the Kia EV6 move freely and only lock during sudden stops or emergency situations through the emergency locking mechanism. When installing a child restraint system (CRS), however, the seat belt retractor must be manually switched into the “automatic locking” mode by pulling the seat belt completely outward.

The automatic locking mode helps prevent normal vehicle movement or child activity from loosening the seat belt and compromising the secure installation of the child restraint system inside the Kia EV6.

To correctly install a child restraint system on the rear seats of the Kia EV6, follow these important steps:

  1. Place the child restraint system on the rear seat and route the lap/shoulder belt around or through the CRS according to the instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer.

Carefully verify that the seat belt webbing is completely flat and not twisted during installation.

  2. Insert the lap/shoulder belt latch securely into the buckle until a clear and distinct “click” is heard.

Position the buckle release button so that it remains easy to access in the event the child restraint must be removed quickly.

  3. Slowly pull the shoulder portion of the seat belt completely out of the retractor. Once fully extended, the Kia EV6 seat belt retractor automatically shifts into the child restraint “automatic locking” mode.

  4. Allow the shoulder belt to retract slowly while listening carefully for a noticeable “clicking” or “ratcheting” sound. This sound confirms that the retractor has entered automatic locking mode. If no sound is heard, repeat steps 3 and 4 until the locking mode is activated correctly.

  5. Remove as much slack from the seat belt as possible by pressing downward firmly on the child restraint system while feeding the shoulder belt back into the Kia EV6 seat belt retractor.

  6. Push and pull the child restraint system forward and side-to-side to confirm that the CRS is firmly secured in the vehicle seat. If excessive movement is detected, release the seat belt and repeat the installation process from steps 2 through 5.

  7. Double-check that the Kia EV6 retractor remains in automatic locking mode by attempting to pull additional seat belt webbing from the retractor. If the belt cannot be extended, the system is properly locked.

If the child restraint manufacturer recommends or requires the use of a tether anchor together with the lap/shoulder seat belt, refer to the section covering the LATCH anchor system for additional instructions regarding proper CRS installation in the Kia EV6.

WARNING

Auto Lock Mode

Always place the seat belt retractor into Automatic Lock mode whenever installing a child restraint system in the Kia EV6. If the retractor is not properly locked, the child restraint may shift during sudden braking, sharp turns, or collisions. An improperly secured CRS can result in serious injury or death. Always pull the seat belt completely outward to activate the “Auto Lock” function before tightening the child restraint.

NOTE

Once the seat belt in the Kia EV6 is fully retracted to its normal resting position, the retractor automatically switches back from the “automatic locking” mode to the standard emergency locking mode used for adult passengers.

To remove the child restraint system, press the buckle release button, remove the lap/shoulder belt from the CRS, and allow the seat belt to retract completely back into the Kia EV6 retractor assembly.
