Kia EV6: Seating and safety restraints / Seat belts

Contents:

The following Kia EV6 section explains important seat belt precautions, proper seat belt usage, and fastening procedures.

Correct use of the Kia EV6 seat belt system is essential for maximum occupant protection during collisions and emergency driving situations.

Seat belt restraint system

For maximum protection while driving the Kia EV6, always wear your seat belt whenever the vehicle is moving.

  • A properly positioned Kia EV6 shoulder belt should rest midway across the shoulder and collarbone area.

  • Never allow children to ride in the Kia EV6 front passenger seat unless appropriate child restraint recommendations are followed. Refer to the Child Restraint System (CRS) section for more information.

WARNING

Twisted Seat Belt

Always make sure the Kia EV6 seat belt webbing is not twisted while being worn.

A twisted seat belt may not provide proper protection during a collision and could cause injury by applying excessive force against the body.

WARNING

Shoulder Belt

  • Never wear the Kia EV6 shoulder belt underneath your arm or behind your back.

An improperly positioned shoulder belt cannot protect the occupant correctly during an accident.

  • Always wear both the lap belt and shoulder belt portions of the Kia EV6 restraint system together.

WARNING

Damaged Seat Belt

If any part of the Kia EV6 seat belt webbing, buckle, or hardware becomes damaged, replace the entire seat belt assembly immediately.

A damaged seat belt may no longer provide adequate occupant protection during a crash.

Kia EV6 seat belts are designed to distribute restraint forces across the stronger bony areas of the body including the pelvis, chest, and shoulders.

The lap belt section should always be worn low across the hips and pelvis area and never across the abdomen.

Kia EV6 seat belts should be adjusted firmly while still remaining comfortable in order to provide maximum protection.

A loose seat belt significantly reduces the protection available to the occupant.

Prevent contamination of the Kia EV6 seat belt webbing by avoiding exposure to oils, chemicals, polishing compounds, or battery acid.

The Kia EV6 seat belt webbing may be cleaned safely using mild soap and water.

If the webbing becomes frayed, contaminated, cut, or damaged, the entire Kia EV6 seat belt assembly should be replaced immediately.

  • No modifications or aftermarket additions should be installed that may interfere with proper Kia EV6 seat belt adjustment or slack removal mechanisms.

  • When fastening the Kia EV6 seat belt, always ensure the latch is inserted into the correct buckle corresponding to the seating position.

Using the wrong buckle may prevent proper restraint operation.

  • Do not repeatedly fasten and unfasten the Kia EV6 seat belt while driving.

This may distract the driver, reduce vehicle control, and increase the risk of serious injury or accidents.

  • When fastening the Kia EV6 seat belt, ensure that the belt does not pass over hard, sharp, or fragile objects.

WARNING

Seat Belt Buckle

Do not allow foreign materials such as crumbs, liquids, gum, dirt, or coins to enter the Kia EV6 seat belt buckle mechanism.

Foreign objects may prevent the seat belt from latching securely and could reduce occupant safety.

Pre-tensioner seat belt

The Kia EV6 is equipped with advanced pre-tensioner seat belts for the driver, front passenger, and second-row outboard passengers (excluding the center rear seating position).

The Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belt system is designed to improve occupant protection by tightening the seat belt instantly during certain collision situations.

Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belt system and front occupant safety restraint technology

The Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belts may activate together with the SRS air bag system when the vehicle detects a sufficiently severe frontal collision.

During sudden braking or emergency driving situations, the Kia EV6 seat belt retractor may lock automatically if the occupant moves forward too quickly.

In certain frontal impacts, the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner mechanism activates and retracts the seat belt to hold the occupant more securely against the seat.

This additional restraint helps reduce occupant movement and improves the effectiveness of the Kia EV6 seat belt and air bag systems during a collision.

If the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner system detects excessive seat belt force on the driver, front passenger, or second-row outer seat belts during activation, the integrated load limiter inside the retractor mechanism may release part of the pressure applied to the occupant.

The Kia EV6 load limiter system is designed to help reduce chest pressure while still maintaining effective restraint performance.

NOTE

When the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belts activate, a loud sound may be heard and fine dust resembling smoke may become visible inside the passenger compartment.

These are normal operating characteristics of the Kia EV6 restraint system and are not considered hazardous.

The Kia EV6 seat belt pretensioner system includes the following major components, shown in the illustration below:

The actual installation locations of Kia EV6 pre-tensioner system components may vary slightly depending on vehicle configuration and equipment specifications.

  1. SRS air bag warning light

  2. Front retractor pretensioner assembly

  3. SRS control module

  4. Second-row retractor pre-tensioner assembly

The Kia EV6 SRS and pre-tensioner systems continuously monitor vehicle impact conditions and occupant restraint status to improve passenger safety.

WARNING

Skin Irritation

After an accident involving Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belt activation, wash all exposed skin thoroughly.

The fine dust generated during pre-tensioner deployment may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for prolonged periods.

NOTE

  • The Kia EV6 driver, front passenger, and rear outboard passenger pre-tensioner systems may activate not only during certain frontal collisions, but also during specific side impacts or rollover situations if the vehicle is equipped with side air bags or curtain air bags.

  • Because the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner system shares sensors with the SRS air bag system, the SRS air bag warning light (Kia EV6 SRS air bag and pre-tensioner seat belt warning indicator icon) on the instrument cluster illuminates for approximately 6 seconds after the EV button is switched to the POWER ON or DRIVE READY position.

The warning light should then turn off automatically.

If the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belt system malfunctions, the SRS warning light may remain illuminated even if no visible air bag malfunction is present.

If the Kia EV6 SRS warning light does not illuminate after switching to the POWER ON or DRIVE READY position, remains illuminated after approximately 6 seconds, or turns on while driving, have the vehicle inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer.

Prompt inspection of the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner and SRS systems is important to maintain proper occupant protection.

WARNING

Hot Pre-tensioner

Do not touch the Kia EV6 pre-tensioner seat belt assemblies immediately after activation.

Following deployment during a collision, the pretensioner mechanism may become extremely hot and could cause burns if touched.

NOTE

Never attempt to inspect, service, modify, or repair the Kia EV6 pretensioner seat belt system yourself.

Pretensioner seat belt maintenance and replacement procedures must only be performed by an authorized Kia dealer using approved service procedures.

Kia EV6 pretensioner seat belts are designed for one-time activation only.

After deployment, all activated Kia EV6 pretensioner seat belt assemblies must be replaced completely.

Always contact an authorized Kia dealer for proper inspection and replacement following any collision involving pre-tensioner activation.

Seat belt precautions

The following Kia EV6 seat belt precautions are important for maintaining occupant safety and ensuring proper restraint system operation.

Always follow these recommendations carefully whenever driving or riding in the Kia EV6.
