Be sure the exhaust system does not leak.

The exhaust system of the Kia Seltos should be inspected whenever the vehicle is raised for an oil change, service work, tire inspection, or any other maintenance procedure.

If you notice a change in the exhaust sound, smell unusual fumes, or drive over an object that strikes the underside of the vehicle, have the exhaust system checked as soon as possible by an authorized Kia dealer. A damaged exhaust system can affect vehicle performance and may allow dangerous gases to enter areas where they should not be present.

Kia Seltos exhaust system leak inspection warning

WARNING

Engine exhaust

Do not breathe exhaust fumes or leave the engine running for a long time in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can cause loss of consciousness and death by asphyxiation. Always make sure the Kia Seltos is operated in an area with proper ventilation.

Drive mode integrated control system

The Drive Mode integrated control system in the Kia Seltos allows the driver to select a driving mode according to personal preference, road conditions, and the desired balance between comfort, response, and efficiency.

Kia Seltos Drive Mode integrated control system selector knob

Drive Mode is activated by turning the selector knob. As the knob is turned, the selected driving mode changes and the corresponding mode information appears on the instrument cluster.

Kia Seltos Drive Mode display with NORMAL SMART and SPORT modes

  • NORMAL mode: NORMAL mode provides smooth driving response and a comfortable ride for everyday Kia Seltos driving.

  • SMART mode: SMART mode automatically adjusts the driving character between SMART NORMAL and SMART SPORT according to the driver's habits and current driving behavior.

  • SPORT mode: SPORT mode provides a more responsive and sporty driving feel, with firmer performance characteristics.

When the engine is restarted, the drive mode returns to NORMAL mode. If the Kia Seltos was previously in NORMAL or SPORT mode, NORMAL mode will be selected again after restart.

SMART mode

In SMART mode, the Kia Seltos automatically selects an appropriate driving style between NORMAL and SPORT based on how the driver accelerates, brakes, and steers.

  • Turning the knob activates SMART mode. When SMART mode is active, a blue indicator appears on the instrument cluster.

  • If the engine was turned OFF while SMART mode was selected, the vehicle starts again in SMART mode.

  • SMART mode automatically manages vehicle behavior, including shift patterns and engine torque response, according to the driver's driving habits.

Kia Seltos SMART mode fuel efficiency and SPORT response notice

NOTICE

  • When you drive smoothly in SMART mode, the system may change to SMART NORMAL mode to help improve fuel efficiency. Actual fuel economy can vary depending on driving conditions such as uphill driving, downhill driving, acceleration, deceleration, traffic, and road surface.

  • When the Kia Seltos is driven more dynamically, such as during rapid acceleration, strong deceleration, or sharp cornering, the system may change to SMART SPORT mode. This can improve response but may reduce fuel economy.

Various driving situations you may encounter in SMART mode

  • The drive mode will automatically change to SMART NORMAL mode after a certain period of gentle accelerator use. In this situation, your driving style is recognized as economical.

  • The drive mode will automatically change to SMART SPORT when you accelerate quickly or repeatedly operate the steering wheel. In this situation, your driving style is recognized as more aggressive. The vehicle may hold a lower gear to improve acceleration, deceleration, and engine braking response.

  • You may still feel engine braking after releasing the accelerator pedal in SMART SPORT mode. This occurs because the Kia Seltos may remain in a lower gear for a short period to prepare for the next acceleration. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.

  • The drive mode changes to SMART SPORT only in more demanding driving situations. During most normal driving, the system remains in SMART NORMAL mode.

Limitation of SMART mode

SMART mode may be limited in the following situations. The OFF indicator may appear when the system cannot continue SMART mode operation.

  • Manual shift lever operation: If the driver manually moves the shift lever, SMART mode is deactivated. The Kia Seltos then responds according to the selected manual shift operation.

  • Cruise Control activation: Cruise Control may deactivate SMART mode when it begins controlling vehicle speed. SMART mode is not necessarily canceled simply by turning Cruise Control on, but it may be limited when another system takes priority.

  • Transmission oil temperature: If the transmission oil temperature is extremely low or extremely high, SMART mode may be temporarily deactivated. The system can operate in most normal driving situations, but unusual transmission temperatures may limit mode selection until conditions return to normal.

SPORT mode

SPORT mode in the Kia Seltos adjusts driving dynamics by changing steering effort, engine response, and transmission control logic. This mode is intended to give the driver a more responsive and engaging feel when stronger acceleration or firmer vehicle behavior is desired.

  • When SPORT mode is selected by turning the Drive Mode knob, the SPORT indicator appears in red.

  • Whenever the engine is restarted, the Drive Mode returns to NORMAL mode. If you want to use SPORT mode again, select it again using the knob.

  • When SPORT mode is activated:

    • The engine RPM may remain higher for a short period even after the accelerator pedal is released.

    • Upshifts may be delayed during acceleration to provide stronger response and a sportier driving feel.

NOTICE

Fuel efficiency may decrease when the Kia Seltos is driven in SPORT mode, especially during frequent acceleration or aggressive driving.

Economical operation

The fuel economy of your Kia Seltos depends mainly on how you drive, where you drive, and the conditions in which you drive.

Each of these factors affects how many miles or kilometers you can travel on a gallon or liter of fuel. To operate the Kia Seltos as economically as possible, use the following driving suggestions to help save fuel, reduce wear, and lower repair costs:

  • Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate, avoid sudden "jackrabbit" starts, and do not use full-throttle acceleration unless necessary. Maintain a steady cruising speed and avoid racing between stoplights. Adjust your speed to traffic flow so you do not need to brake or accelerate unnecessarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever possible.

Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can reduce unnecessary braking. This also helps lower brake wear.

  • Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel your vehicle consumes. Maintaining a reasonable speed, especially on the highway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.

  • Take care of your tires. Keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. Incorrect tire pressure, whether too high or too low, causes unnecessary tire wear and can reduce fuel economy. Check tire pressure at least once a month.

  • Make sure the wheels are correctly aligned. Poor alignment can result from hitting curbs or driving too fast over uneven surfaces. Improper alignment increases tire wear, may create handling problems, and can increase fuel consumption.

  • Keep your Kia Seltos in good condition. For better fuel economy and lower maintenance costs, follow the recommended maintenance schedule in More Details. If the vehicle is driven in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance may be required. Refer to More Details for service information.

  • Travel lightly. Do not carry unnecessary weight in the vehicle, because added weight reduces fuel economy and places extra load on the engine, tires, and brakes.

  • Do not let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting and not stopped in traffic, turn off the engine and restart it only when you are ready to drive.

  • Do not "lug" or "over-rev" the engine. Lugging means driving too slowly in too high a gear, which can cause the engine to struggle. Shift to a lower gear when needed. Over-revving means running the engine beyond its safe operating range, which can be avoided by shifting at the recommended speeds.

  • Driving with windows open at high speeds can reduce fuel economy because of increased air resistance.

  • Fuel economy is lower in crosswinds and headwinds. To help reduce this effect, slow down and drive smoothly when facing strong wind conditions.

Keeping the Kia Seltos in good operating condition is important for both economy and safety. A well-maintained vehicle usually runs more efficiently, responds better, and helps prevent avoidable repair costs.

Have scheduled inspections and maintenance performed by an authorized Kia dealer.

Kia Seltos economical operation warning about turning engine off while driving

WARNING

Engine off during motion

Never turn the engine off to coast down hills or while the Kia Seltos is moving. Power steering and power brakes will not operate properly without the engine running. Turning off the ignition while driving could also engage the steering wheel lock, causing loss of steering control. Keep the engine running and shift to an appropriate lower gear when engine braking is needed.

Vehicle load limit ➤

Vehicle weight

This section explains the proper loading of your Kia Seltos, with or without a trailer, so the fully loaded vehicle remains within its designed weight rating limits.

Correct loading helps the Kia Seltos deliver its intended handling, braking, ride comfort, and durability. Before loading the vehicle, become familiar with the following weight-related terms used in the vehicle specifications and on the compliance label:

Base curb weight is the weight of the vehicle with a full tank of fuel and all standard equipment. It does not include passengers, cargo, or optional equipment.

Vehicle curb weight is the weight of your new Kia Seltos when it was delivered by the dealer, plus any aftermarket equipment that has been installed.

Cargo weight includes all weight added to the base curb weight, such as cargo, luggage, accessories, and optional equipment.

GAW (Gross Axle Weight) is the total weight placed on each axle, front and rear, including vehicle curb weight and all payload.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) is the maximum allowable weight that can be carried by a single axle, either front or rear. These values are shown on the compliance label. The total load on each axle must never exceed its GAWR.

GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is the base curb weight plus the actual cargo weight and the weight of all passengers.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded vehicle, including all options, equipment, passengers, and cargo. The GVWR is shown on the certification label located on the driver's door sill.

Kia Seltos vehicle weight ratings and loading caution

CAUTION

Do not use replacement tires with a lower load-carrying capacity than the original tires, because they may reduce the safe GVWR and GAWR capability of your Kia Seltos. Replacement tires with a higher load rating than the original tires do not increase the vehicle's GVWR or GAWR limits.
