Kia Seltos: Driving your vehicle / Intelligent variable transmission (IVT)
Contents:
The Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) in the Kia Seltos adjusts automatically according to vehicle speed, accelerator pedal input, engine load, and the selected shift lever position. Instead of requiring the driver to choose individual gears manually during normal driving, the IVT is designed to provide smooth acceleration, efficient power delivery, and comfortable everyday operation.
Depress the brake pedal and press the lock release button when shifting.
Press the lock release button when shifting.
The shift lever can be moved freely.
Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) operation
For smooth IVT operation, press the brake pedal when shifting from N (Neutral) into a forward gear or R (Reverse). This helps the Kia Seltos move away safely and reduces unnecessary stress on the transmission components.
WARNING
Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT)
-
Always check the area around your Kia Seltos for people, especially children, before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).
-
Before leaving the driver's seat, always make sure the shift lever is in P (Park). Then fully apply the parking brake and turn the engine off. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement may occur if these precautions are not followed in the correct order.
-
Do not use engine braking by rapidly shifting from a higher range to a lower range on slippery roads.
The vehicle may lose traction and slip, which could cause an accident.
CAUTION
-
To help avoid transmission damage, do not accelerate the engine while the Kia Seltos is in R (Reverse) or any forward driving position with the brakes applied.
-
When stopped on an incline, do not hold the vehicle stationary by using engine power. Use the service brake or the parking brake instead.
-
Do not shift from N (Neutral) or P (Park) into D (Drive) or R (Reverse) when the engine speed is above idle.
Good driving practices
-
Never move the shift lever from P (Park) or N (Neutral) to any other position while the accelerator pedal is pressed.
-
Never move the shift lever into P (Park) while the Kia Seltos is moving.
-
Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped before shifting into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
-
Never shift the vehicle out of gear and coast down a hill. This can be extremely dangerous. Always keep the transmission engaged while the vehicle is moving.
-
Do not "ride" the brakes. Continuous brake use can cause overheating and reduce braking performance. When driving down a long hill, slow down and use a lower driving range so engine braking can help control vehicle speed.
-
Always use the parking brake when parking. Do not rely only on placing the transmission in P (Park) to keep the Kia Seltos from moving.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating, or shifting. On ice, snow, rain, mud, or loose gravel, a sudden change in vehicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and may lead to loss of control.
-
The best vehicle performance and fuel economy are achieved by pressing and releasing the accelerator pedal smoothly. Smooth driving also helps reduce wear on the Kia Seltos IVT system and improves passenger comfort.
WARNING
-
When driving uphill or downhill, always shift to D (Drive) for forward driving or R (Reverse) for backing up, and check the gear position shown on the cluster before moving. Driving in the opposite direction of the selected gear can create a dangerous situation by shutting off the engine and affecting braking performance.
-
Always buckle up. In a collision, an unbelted occupant is significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed than an occupant wearing a seat belt properly.
-
Avoid high speeds when cornering or turning.
-
Do not make sudden steering wheel movements, such as sharp lane changes or fast, aggressive turns.
-
The risk of rollover increases greatly if control of the Kia Seltos is lost at highway speeds.
-
If your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply. Slow down first, then guide the Kia Seltos carefully back into the travel lanes.
-
Never exceed posted speed limits. Adjust your speed for road surface, weather, traffic, and visibility.
WARNING
If your Kia Seltos becomes stuck in snow, mud, sand, or a similar surface, you may try to rock the vehicle free by moving it forward and backward. Do not attempt this procedure if people, animals, or objects are near the vehicle. During rocking, the vehicle may suddenly move forward or backward as it becomes unstuck, which could cause injury or damage.
