  10. Rear side airbag module

  11. Retractor pretensioner assemblies

  12. Driver’s front air bag module

  13. Air bag warning light

The SRSCM serves as the central brain of the system; it continuously monitors all integrated elements while the Kia K4 ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ON position and remains active for approximately 3 minutes after the ignition is turned off. Its primary function is to analyze sensor data in real-time to determine if a frontal, near-frontal, or side impact has reached the severity threshold required to trigger the airbag deployment or seat belt pretensioner activation.

Upon turning the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position, the SRS airbag warning light on the Kia K4 instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 3–6 seconds as part of a standard system self-diagnostic check, after which the light should automatically extinguish.

WARNING

If any of the following conditions occur, it signifies a potential malfunction within the SRS of your Kia K4. To ensure your safety, you must have the system inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer:

  • The warning light fails to illuminate briefly during the ignition-on self-check sequence.

  • The light remains illuminated after the initial 6-second diagnostic window has passed.

  • The light activates unexpectedly while the Kia K4 is in motion.

  • The warning light begins to blink or flash when the ENGINE START/STOP button is set to the ON position.

A fully inflated airbag, used in conjunction with a properly fastened seat belt, serves to gradually decelerate the driver's or passenger's forward motion. This synergy significantly reduces the risk of hazardous contact with the steering wheel or the instrument panel. By expanding rapidly, the airbag also helps distribute the kinetic force of the impact more evenly across the occupant's body, thereby mitigating localized injury risks. Once the protective cushion is fully deployed, the airbag in your Kia K4 begins to deflate immediately; this controlled deflation is crucial, as it enables the driver to maintain outward visibility and retain the ability to steer the vehicle or operate other essential controls following the impact.

You can identify the airbag modules by the "AIR BAG" embossed on the steering wheel pad cover and on the front passenger-side panel located directly above the glove box within your Kia K4.

The SRS is specifically engineered to provide the driver and/or front passenger with supplemental protection that extends beyond the safety provided by seat belts alone during a frontal impact of sufficient severity. To ensure the highest level of safety, the system utilizes a network of sophisticated sensors to analyze real-time data, including the use of seat belts by occupants and the precise severity of the collision.

A seat belt buckle sensor is integrated into the system to detect whether the passenger's seat belt is correctly fastened. These data points allow the Kia K4 SRS control module to intelligently manage airbag deployment force, optimizing the response based on both seat belt usage and the intensity of the impact.

The Kia K4 features an advanced, dual-stage SRS. The first stage of inflation is designed to deploy during moderate impacts, while the second stage activates for high-severity collisions, ensuring an appropriate response to varying accident conditions.

The Supplemental Restraint System Control Module (SRSCM) acts as the central processor, governing inflation dynamics. It is critical to remember that properly wearing your seat belt is the most effective way to reduce the risk and severity of injuries; failing to do so significantly compromises your safety in an accident.

Additionally, your Kia K4 includes an Occupant Detection System (ODS) in the front passenger seat. The ODS constantly monitors the seat to determine if a passenger is present, allowing it to deactivate the front passenger airbag under specific conditions. For a deeper understanding of this feature, please refer to the "Occupant Detection System (ODS)" section of this manual.

Government regulations necessitate that manufacturers provide a contact point for individuals requiring vehicle modifications for disabilities, as such changes may impact the performance of advanced airbag systems. You may reach Kia’s toll-free Customer Assistance center at 1-800-333-4542 (U.S. only). Please note that while we respect the need for accessibility, Kia neither endorses nor provides technical support for structural or component modifications that alter the integrity of the Kia K4 advanced airbag system, including the ODS.

These advanced airbags work in conjunction with seat belt pretensioners to bolster occupant protection during frontal crashes. Note that front airbags are not designed to deploy in scenarios where the seat belt system alone provides sufficient protection, nor will they typically deploy in side-impact, rear-impact, or rollover accidents. However, should a side impact meet or exceed the frontal deployment threshold, front airbags may deploy as an added safety measure. Conversely, they will remain inactive during frontal impacts that occur below the system's calibrated deployment threshold.

Please note that the actual airbag configurations and physical appearance within your Kia K4 may differ slightly from the provided illustrations.

Side airbags are designed to provide the driver, front passenger, and 2nd-row outboard passengers with an essential layer of supplemental protection that significantly enhances the safety offered by seat belts alone.

  • The side airbags in the Kia K4 are programmed to deploy during specific side-impact collisions, with deployment timing and force determined by the severity of the crash.

  • Depending on the collision dynamics, the side airbags may deploy exclusively on the side of the impact or on both sides of the vehicle to maximize protection.

  • The side curtain airbags are integrated to deploy on both sides of the Kia K4 if a rollover or potential rollover event is detected.

  • It is important to understand that side airbags are not designed to deploy in every side impact or rollover situation, as deployment is contingent upon meeting specific safety thresholds.

  • The side airbag system is a supplement to—not a replacement for—your seat belt systems. For your safety, always ensure all seat belts are properly fastened while the Kia K4 is in operation.

  • To guarantee the best protection and to minimize the risk of injury during airbag deployment, front seat occupants must sit upright with their seat belts correctly secured. The driver should maintain their hands on the steering wheel at the 9:00 and 3:00 positions, while passengers should keep their arms and hands resting comfortably in their laps.

  • If any damage occurs to your Kia K4 seat upholstery or seat covers, ensure the vehicle is inspected and repaired by an authorized Kia dealer. Always inform the service technician that your vehicle is equipped with side airbags and the Occupant Detection System (ODS).

Actual component placement within the Kia K4 may vary from these illustrations.

Curtain airbags protect occupants in certain side impacts and are instrumental in reducing the risk of passenger ejection during a rollover event, especially when used in conjunction with properly fastened seat belts.

  • The curtain airbags in the Kia K4 deploy during certain side-impact collisions, with activation logic based on the severity, angle, speed, and exact point of impact.

  • The curtain airbags may deploy on the side of the impact or on both sides, depending on the forces involved.

  • The curtain airbags on both sides of the Kia K4 will deploy in specific rollover scenarios to help maintain cabin integrity.

  • The curtain airbags are not designed to deploy in all side-impact or rollover situations.

To prevent injury, do not allow passengers to lean their heads or bodies against the door panels, extend their arms out of the window, or place any objects between their bodies and the doors when seated in areas equipped with side-impact or curtain airbags in your Kia K4.

Please be aware that the actual physical shape, color, and mounting position of the sensors in your Kia K4 may differ slightly from the provided illustration.

  1. Front impact sensor: Designed to detect significant frontal deceleration and signal the SRS control module.

  2. Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control module/rollover sensor: The central brain of the Kia K4 safety system, which processes sensor data and detects vehicle rollover events.

  3. Side pressure sensors (front door): Specifically calibrated to detect pressure changes during side-impact events to initiate rapid deployment.

  4. Side impact sensor (B-pillar): Provides critical data regarding the severity and location of side impacts.

WARNING

Air bag sensors

  • Do not strike or allow any sharp objects to impact the areas where the Kia K4 airbag sensors are installed. Any physical trauma to these components may cause an unexpected airbag deployment, which could result in serious personal injury or even death.

  • If the installation location, mounting hardware, or angular alignment of these sensors is altered in any way, the airbags may deploy erroneously or, conversely, fail to deploy when required. Never attempt to perform maintenance or modifications on or near the airbag sensors. All service must be conducted by a certified technician at an authorized Kia dealership.

  • Do not arbitrarily touch, handle, or adjust the front impact sensor. Any change in the sensor's calibrated angle can cause the entire Kia K4 airbag system to malfunction.

Structural damage or deformation to the front bumper, front end module, body panels, or front doors—where the Kia K4 side collision sensors are mounted—can negatively shift sensor angles and trigger system errors. If your vehicle sustains body damage, have it thoroughly inspected and repaired by an authorized Kia dealer.

Installing aftermarket bumper guards, side steps, running boards, or replacing body modules (like the front bumper or door assembly) with non-genuine parts may severely compromise the collision detection accuracy and airbag deployment performance of your Kia K4. For your peace of mind and safety, only Kia Genuine bumper guards and replacement parts are tested and guaranteed to maintain the original quality and performance standards of your vehicle.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) care

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) in your Kia K4 is engineered to be virtually maintenance-free. Because this system relies on high-precision components and complex circuitry, there are no internal parts that an owner can safely service, repair, or inspect personally.

Your safety is the priority. If you notice that the SRS airbag warning light fails to illuminate during the initial vehicle check, or if the light remains illuminated while driving, please have your Kia K4 inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure the system remains fully functional.

All service-related tasks involving the SRS—including the removal, installation, or repair of the steering wheel, front passenger dashboard panel, front seats, or roof rails—must be performed exclusively by an authorized Kia dealer. Improper handling of these sensitive components can lead to system failure or serious personal injury.

When cleaning the airbag pad covers, use only a soft, dry cloth or a cloth lightly dampened with plain water. You must avoid using harsh chemical solvents, automotive cleaners, or polishes, as these substances can chemically degrade the airbag cover materials and potentially prevent the proper, rapid deployment of the system in an emergency.

Should you need to discard specific components of the airbag system or if you are preparing to scrap your Kia K4, you must adhere to strict safety protocols. An authorized Kia dealer is trained in these specific procedures and can provide the necessary guidance for the safe disposal of these parts. Failing to follow these professional precautions significantly increases the risk of accidental activation and bodily injury.

WARNING

Tampering with SRS

Do not attempt to tamper with, modify, or disconnect the SRS wiring, sensors, or any other critical components within the Kia K4 safety suite. Any unauthorized interference with these systems could result in the accidental inflation of the airbags or, more dangerously, render the entire SRS inoperative when it is needed most.

WARNING

Towing vehicle

When your Kia K4 is being prepared for towing, always ensure the ignition is switched to the OFF position and wait at least 3 minutes before any tilting occurs. The vehicle’s highly sensitive rollover sensors may trigger the deployment of the side and curtain airbags if the car is tilted or hoisted while the system is still active.

Additional safety precautions

  • Never allow passengers to ride in the cargo area or on top of a folded-down back seat. To ensure maximum safety in your Kia K4, all occupants must remain seated upright, positioned fully back against the seatback, with their seat belts securely fastened and their feet resting firmly on the floor at all times while the vehicle is in motion.

  • Passengers should not move out of or change seats while the Kia K4 is moving. A passenger who is not wearing a properly adjusted seat belt during a collision or emergency braking maneuver can be thrown violently against the interior structure, strike other occupants, or even be ejected from the vehicle entirely, leading to catastrophic injury.

  • Each seat belt assembly is designed to restrain only one occupant. Never attempt to share a seat belt between two or more people. If multiple individuals use the same seat belt, the excessive force in a collision can cause serious injury or death for all involved.

  • Do not use any unauthorized accessories on seat belts. Aftermarket devices that claim to improve comfort or reposition the seat belt (such as shoulder pads or clips) can significantly reduce the effectiveness of the restraint system, increasing the risk of serious injury during a crash. Always use the Kia K4 seat belt system exactly as it was factory-engineered.

  • Passengers should never place hard or sharp objects between themselves and the airbag deployment zones. Carrying items like pens, keys, eyeglasses, or rigid containers on your lap, or holding them in your mouth, can turn these objects into dangerous projectiles if an airbag inflates, potentially causing severe internal or facial injuries.

  • Maintain a safe distance from all airbag covers. All occupants in the Kia K4 should maintain an upright posture, sitting fully back in their seats with belts fastened and feet on the floor. If a passenger is positioned too close to an airbag cover, they are at a higher risk of sustaining impact-related injuries should the airbags deploy during a collision.

  • Exercise caution regarding interior modifications. Do not install any additional equipment, electronic devices, or decorative items on or near the dashboard, door panels, or roof rails, as these can obstruct airbag deployment or become hazardous during an emergency in your Kia K4.

  • Do not attach or place any objects on or near the airbag covers. Any item mounted to, attached, or placed on the front or side airbag covers in your Kia K4 can become a dangerous projectile upon deployment or completely block the airbag from opening, thereby interfering with the system’s life-saving operation.

  • Do not modify the front seats. The front seats of the Kia K4 are precision-engineered to integrate with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Any unauthorized modification—including aftermarket upholstery changes or internal seat structure alterations—could disrupt the sensing components or the proper deployment path of the side airbags.

  • Do not store items under the front seats. Keeping loose items, bags, or equipment under the front seats of your Kia K4 can obstruct the SRS wiring harnesses and sensitive occupant detection sensors, potentially leading to system malfunctions or inaccurate airbag deployment during a critical event.

  • Never hold an infant or child on your lap while the vehicle is in motion. In the event of a collision, the forces involved are far too great for any human to hold onto a child securely. An infant or child held on your lap could be crushed between your body and the interior of the Kia K4, leading to fatal consequences. All children must be properly secured in age-appropriate child safety seats or fitted with the correct seat belts in the rear seating area.

WARNING

  • Occupant Positioning: Sitting improperly, slouching, or resting out of the designated seating position can cause occupants to be shifted dangerously close to a deploying airbag. This improper positioning increases the risk of the occupant striking the interior vehicle structure or being thrown from the Kia K4 entirely, both of which can result in severe personal injury or death.

  • Correct Seating Posture: To ensure the airbag system functions as intended, all occupants should always sit upright with the seatback locked in an upright position. You should remain centered on the seat cushion, keep your seat belt fastened correctly, extend your legs comfortably, and keep your feet firmly planted on the floor of your Kia K4.

Adding equipment to or modifying your air bag-equipped vehicle

Any structural modifications to your Kia K4—such as altering the vehicle frame, the bumper reinforcement system, the front-end body panels, or the side sheet metal—can profoundly impact the deployment characteristics of your airbag system. Furthermore, changing the vehicle’s factory ride height significantly alters the impact sensors' baseline data. To maintain the integrity of your Kia K4 safety systems, consult an authorized dealer before undertaking any modifications.

Air bag warning labels

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandates specific safety warning labels within the cabin. These are permanently affixed to the sun visors to ensure all occupants are alerted to the potential risks and protective measures associated with the Kia K4 advanced airbag system.
