Kia K4: Air bag - Advanced Supplemental Restraint System / Precautions

WARNING

  • To reduce the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries and to ensure you receive the maximum safety benefit from the advanced restraint system in your Kia K4, please adhere to these critical guidelines:

    • Never place a child in any child restraint system (CRS) or booster seat in the front passenger seat of your Kia K4.

    • An infant or child can be severely injured or killed by the force of an airbag deployment during a collision if they are improperly positioned in the front seat.

    • Children under the age of 13 must always be properly restrained in the rear seat of the Kia K4. If an individual aged 13 or older must be seated in the front passenger seat, they must be correctly buckled, and the seat should be adjusted as far back from the dashboard as possible.

    • When children are seated in the rear outboard positions, they must always be secured in an appropriate child restraint system that matches their physical size and developmental needs.

    • ABC: Always Buckle Children in the back seat. It remains the safest location for children of any age to ride while the vehicle is in motion.

    • For maximum safety protection in all crash scenarios, all occupants, including the driver, should always wear their seat belts, regardless of whether an airbag is provided at their specific seating position. Proper seat belt use significantly minimizes the risk of severe injury or death. Do not sit or lean unnecessarily close to any airbag while the Kia K4 is in motion.

    • The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag in your Kia K4 must deploy extremely rapidly to provide effective protection. If an occupant is out of position—especially if they are not wearing a seat belt—the airbag may strike them with great force, resulting in serious or fatal injuries.

    • Both front and side-curtain airbags can cause injury to occupants who are improperly positioned in the front seating areas.

    • Adjust your seat as far back as is practical from the front airbags, while still ensuring you can maintain full, comfortable control of the Kia K4.

    • Sitting improperly or reclining too far can result in serious or fatal injury during a crash. All occupants should sit upright with the seatback in an upright position, centered on the seat cushion, and securely buckled. Legs should be extended comfortably with feet flat on the floor until the vehicle is parked.

    • To avoid severe personal injury caused by deploying airbags, the driver should sit as far back from the steering wheel as is comfortable. The front passenger should always move their seat to the rearmost position and sit firmly back against the seat cushion.

  • To ensure passenger safety, do not allow occupants to lean their heads or bodies against the doors, rest their arms on the door panels, stretch limbs out of the window, or place any objects between the doors and passengers when seated in positions equipped with side and/or curtain airbags in your Kia K4.

  • For optimal protection from the side airbag system and to avoid potential injury during deployment, all front seat occupants in the Kia K4 must sit in an upright position with their seat belts properly fastened and adjusted.

  • Do not place any objects—such as instrument panel covers, cellular phone holders, cup holders, perfume bottles, or decorative stickers—on or near the airbag modules located on the steering wheel, instrument cluster, windshield, or the passenger-side panel above the glove box. In the event of a crash, these objects could become hazardous projectiles if the airbags deploy. Never place objects directly over the airbag housing or between yourself and the airbag.

  • Never insert or attach any objects into the small openings or seams near the side airbag labels on the Kia K4 vehicle seats. During an airbag deployment, such obstructions can interfere with the inflation process, potentially causing the system to malfunction or resulting in severe bodily harm.

  • When installing liquid air fresheners, avoid placing them near the instrument cluster or on any surface of the Kia K4 instrument panel. If the airbag deploys, these containers can transform into dangerous projectiles, posing a significant injury risk.

  • Do not place items directly over the airbag deployment zones or between the airbag and yourself. Additionally, avoid attaching accessories or equipment to areas where the airbag inflates, such as the doors, side door glass, or the front and rear structural pillars.

  • For safety reasons, do not hang heavy clothing or other items on the Kia K4 coat hooks.

  • If the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light remains illuminated while the Kia K4 is in motion, have the system immediately inspected and repaired by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure ongoing safety.

  • SRS airbags are designed for a single-use deployment. Always have an authorized Kia dealer replace the airbag module and associated components immediately after any deployment event.

  • Keep all SRS wiring and internal components dry. Exposure to water or other liquids can render these critical safety systems inoperative, which may lead to fire hazards or a failure of the airbags to deploy during an accident.

  • If your Kia K4 has been subjected to flooding—indicated by soaked carpeting or water on the floor—do not attempt to start the engine. Instead, have the vehicle professionally inspected by an authorized Kia dealer. When cleaning airbag pad covers, use only a soft, dry cloth or a cloth lightly moistened with plain water. The use of harsh solvents or chemical cleaners can adversely affect the material integrity of the airbag covers, potentially compromising the proper deployment of the system.

  • Please be aware that the rapid inflation of an airbag in your Kia K4 can cause minor injuries, including facial or bodily abrasions, potential burns from the friction of the fabric, or lacerations resulting from broken glass.

  • Following a deployment event, the airbag-related components located within the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and along the roof rails above the doors of the Kia K4 will be extremely hot. To prevent thermal injuries, do not touch these storage areas or internal components immediately after the airbags have inflated.

  • Front and side airbags are designed to protect properly seated occupants; however, they can cause serious injury to passengers who are improperly positioned or leaning out of their seats.

  • In certain collision scenarios, there is a risk that the driver’s, front passenger’s, or side and curtain airbags in your Kia K4 may fail to trigger or may not deploy exactly as intended if the vehicle's structural integrity or sensor pathways are compromised.

  • To prevent an unexpected deployment of the side airbag system, which could result in personal injury, avoid any sharp impacts to the areas near the side impact sensors whenever the ignition of the Kia K4 is in the ON position, or for approximately 3 minutes after the vehicle has been switched to the OFF position.

  • Do not strike or allow any heavy objects to impact the specific locations where airbag modules or impact sensors are installed in the Kia K4. Such impacts may trigger an unintended airbag deployment, which could lead to serious personal injury or, in extreme cases, fatality.

  • The performance of your Kia K4 safety systems depends on precise sensor calibration. If the installation location or the mounting angle of these sensors is altered in any way, the airbags may deploy at the wrong time or fail to deploy when necessary. Do not attempt to perform maintenance on or near the airbag sensors; always have these components inspected and repaired exclusively by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • Do not tamper with, modify, or disconnect the electrical wiring or other components of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). This includes avoiding the addition of badges to the airbag pad covers or performing aftermarket modifications to the body structure of the Kia K4. Any unauthorized modification can adversely affect SRS performance and increase the risk of injury. If you require changes to the vehicle's interior, ensure all work is performed by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • When it is time to discard components of the airbag system, or if the Kia K4 must be scrapped, specific safety procedures must be strictly followed. This includes the professional removal of SRS modules and seat belt pre-tensioners to mitigate the risk of fire or accidental activation. An authorized Kia dealer is fully trained in these procedures and should be consulted to ensure the safe disposal of all Kia K4 safety equipment.

WARNING

  • The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) modules and seat belt pre-tensioners in your Kia K4 contain specialized explosive chemical compounds. If you attempt to scrap or dismantle a vehicle without first professionally removing these SRS components, there is a significant risk of accidental activation and subsequent fire. Before disposing of your Kia K4 at any salvage or scrap facility, you must contact an authorized Kia dealer for proper handling instructions.

  • The SRS functionality is active only when the Kia K4 ignition is in the ON position and remains powered for approximately 3 minutes after the vehicle is switched to the OFF position. If the SRS airbag warning indicator fails to illuminate upon startup, stays lit for more than 6 seconds, or illuminates unexpectedly while you are driving your Kia K4, the system is signaling a malfunction. In such cases, you must have the system thoroughly inspected and repaired by an authorized Kia dealer immediately.

  • The SRS front airbags are designed to deploy only during frontal impacts of sufficient severity. Furthermore, these airbags are one-time-use devices. Always ensure that all occupants are wearing seatbelts, as they remain the primary defense mechanism in all collision types.

  • Please note that the front airbags in the Kia K4 will not deploy during side-impact, rear-impact, or rollover accidents. Additionally, front airbags are not designed to trigger in minor frontal collisions that fall below the calibrated deployment threshold.

  • Never attempt to open, modify, or repair any components of the curtain airbag system. If you believe the system requires attention, all servicing must be performed exclusively by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • Structural damage—such as deformation to the front bumper, vehicle body, or B-pillar—can alter the installation angles of the side collision sensors. If your Kia K4 has sustained such damage, have the impact sensor system inspected and serviced by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure accurate operation.

  • Your Kia K4 is engineered to absorb kinetic energy and trigger airbags based on specific collision dynamics. When installing aftermarket bumper guards or replacing a damaged bumper, use only Kia Genuine Parts or components that meet equivalent safety standards. Non-compliant parts may interfere with the Kia K4 crash sensing performance and adversely affect airbag deployment timing.

  • When the Kia K4 is being prepared for towing, switch the ignition to the OFF position and wait for at least 3 minutes. The side and curtain airbags could potentially deploy within this 3-minute window if the rollover sensor detects a tilt or rollover event, even if the vehicle is being moved while in the OFF position.

  • If your Kia K4 model supports passenger airbag deactivation, ensure the vehicle is in the OFF position before changing the switch status to prevent potential malfunctions within the SRS Control Module. Failure to follow this procedure may increase the risk that the driver, front passenger, or side/curtain airbags fail to trigger correctly during a genuine collision event.

  • Always ensure that the Kia K4 ignition is switched to the OFF position before you attempt to replace any electrical fuses or disconnect the battery terminals. It is critically important that you never remove or replace any fuses associated with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) while the Kia K4 is in the ON position. Failure to strictly observe this safety protocol will trigger an error in the system, resulting in the permanent illumination of the SRS airbag warning light on your instrument cluster.

NOTE

  • The SRS is designed to deploy the front airbags in your Kia K4 only when the vehicle experiences a frontal impact of sufficient severity to meet or exceed specific safety thresholds.

  • It is important to understand that front airbags are not designed to deploy during side-impact, rear-impact, or rollover accidents. Furthermore, they will remain inactive during frontal collisions that occur below the system's calibrated deployment threshold.

  • Side and curtain airbags are engineered to deploy in specific side-impact or rollover conditions that are severe enough to potentially cause significant physical injury to the occupants of the Kia K4.

  • In the event of a rollover, the airbags will inflate almost instantaneously to provide a critical protective buffer, helping to shield occupants from serious physical harm.

  • The side and curtain airbags rely on an advanced rollover sensor; they will inflate automatically as soon as this sensor detects a rollover condition, even if the vehicle is in a state of tipping or sustained tilting.

  • While the primary driver and front passenger airbags are optimized for frontal collisions, they may also deploy in alternative impact scenarios if the front-mounted sensors detect an impact force that meets the required threshold. Similarly, while side and curtain airbags are optimized for side-impact collisions, they may activate in other instances, such as when rollover sensors anticipate a high risk of vehicle instability (even if a full rollover does not ultimately occur). Please note that these systems may also be triggered while the vehicle is being towed if it tilts at an extreme angle. A vital secondary function of the side and curtain airbags is to help prevent the ejection of occupants during a rollover event, especially for those correctly secured with seat belts. Finally, please exercise extreme caution when driving on unimproved roads, gravel surfaces, or sidewalks. Driving over significant bumps, deep potholes, or impacting objects on the vehicle chassis can sometimes lead to unexpected sensor activation and unintended airbag deployment. Always choose appropriate routes for your Kia K4 to maintain the integrity of your safety systems.
