Kia Seltos: Seat belts / Seat belt precautions

Contents:

Follow these important precautions whenever seat belts are used in the Kia Seltos. Correct belt use helps the restraint system protect occupants more effectively during sudden stops, hard braking, or collisions.

Infant or small child

All 50 states have child restraint laws, and the specific requirements may vary by location. You should understand and follow the child passenger safety rules in your state. Infant seats and child seats must be properly selected, positioned, and installed in the rear seat of the Kia Seltos. For more information about the correct use of child restraints, refer to More Details.

Kia Seltos notice about child restraint system use for infants and small children

NOTICE

Children age 13 and under are best protected in an accident when they are properly restrained in the rear seat by a Child Restraint System that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). Before purchasing any Child Restraint System, make sure it has a label certifying that it meets FMVSS 213. The restraint must also be suitable for your child's height and weight. Check the label on the child restraint for this information. Refer to More Details.

Larger children

Children who are too large for a Child Restraint System should always sit in the rear seat of the Kia Seltos and use the available lap/shoulder belt. The lap portion should be fastened snugly across the hips and positioned as low as possible. Check the belt fit from time to time, because a moving or restless child may shift the belt out of the correct position.

Children receive the best protection in an accident when they are properly restrained in the rear seat. If a larger child over age 13 must sit in the front seat, the child should be secured with the available lap/shoulder belt, and the seat should be moved to the rearmost position. Children age 13 and under should always be restrained securely in the rear seat. Never place a child age 13 and under in the front seat, and never install a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of the Kia Seltos.

If the shoulder belt touches the child's neck or face, try seating the child closer to the center of the vehicle. If the belt still contacts the face or neck, the child is not large enough for the vehicle seat belt alone and should use an appropriate Child Restraint System.

Kia Seltos warning about small children needing a proper child restraint system

WARNING

Small children

Do not allow small children to ride in the Kia Seltos without an appropriate Child Restraint System. If the shoulder belt contacts the child's neck or face, the child is too small to use the vehicle seat belt alone. In a collision, an incorrectly positioned seat belt can injure the child's neck, throat, or face.

Restraint of pregnant women

Pregnant women should wear lap/shoulder belt assemblies whenever possible, following any specific recommendations from their doctor. The lap portion of the belt should be worn as securely and as low as possible across the hips, not across the abdomen.

WARNING

Pregnant women

Pregnant women must never place the lap portion of the seat belt above or directly on the abdomen where the fetus is located. During a collision, belt force applied to the abdomen can seriously injure the fetus.

For better protection in the Kia Seltos, the shoulder belt should pass across the chest and shoulder, while the lap belt remains low and snug on the hips.

Injured person

A seat belt should be used when an injured person is being transported in the Kia Seltos. If the injury requires special care or a different seating position, consult a physician for recommendations before travel whenever possible.

One person per belt

Two people, including children, should never attempt to use a single seat belt. Sharing one belt can greatly increase the risk and severity of injury in an accident, because the belt cannot properly restrain more than one occupant.

Do not lie down

To reduce the risk of injury during an accident and to allow the restraint system to work as effectively as possible, all passengers in the Kia Seltos should sit upright whenever the vehicle is moving. The front and rear seatbacks should also be kept in an upright position.

A seat belt cannot provide proper protection if an occupant is lying down across the rear seat or if a seatback is reclined too far. In a collision or sudden stop, the occupant may slide under the belt or be thrown out of the correct seating position.
