Kia Seltos: Automatic transmission / Shift lock system
Contents:
The automatic transmission in the Kia Seltos is equipped with a shift lock system. This safety feature helps prevent the transmission from being shifted from P (Park) into R (Reverse) unless the brake pedal is pressed.
To shift the transmission from P (Park) into R (Reverse), follow these steps:
-
Depress and hold the brake pedal.
-
Start the engine or turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
-
Move the shift lever to the desired position.
If the brake pedal is repeatedly pressed and released while the shift lever is in P (Park), you may hear a chattering sound near the shift lever. This is a normal operating sound of the shift lock mechanism and does not indicate a malfunction.
WARNING
Always press the brake pedal fully before and while shifting out of P (Park). This helps prevent unintended movement of the Kia Seltos, which could injure people inside or around the vehicle.
Shift-lock override
If the shift lever cannot be moved from P (Park) into R (Reverse) while the brake pedal is pressed, keep pressing the brake pedal and perform the following procedure:
-
Place the ignition switch in the LOCK/OFF position.
-
Apply the parking brake fully.
-
Carefully remove the cap covering (1) the shift-lock release access hole.
-
Insert a suitable tool, such as a flathead screwdriver, into the access hole and press down on the tool.
-
Move the shift lever from P (Park).
-
Remove the tool from the shift-lock override access hole and reinstall the cap securely.
If the shift lever still does not move after this procedure, have the Kia Seltos inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
Ignition key interlock system
The ignition key cannot be removed unless the shift lever is in the P (Park) position. This interlock system helps reduce the chance of leaving the Kia Seltos unsecured or parked incorrectly.
