Kia Seltos: Air bag - advanced Supplemental Restraint System / Occupant Detection System (ODS)
Contents:
The Kia Seltos is equipped with an Occupant Detection System (ODS) in the front passenger seat.
The ODS is designed to detect whether a properly seated front passenger is present and to determine whether the front passenger air bag should be activated and ready to inflate if needed. Only the front passenger front air bag is controlled by the ODS.
Do not place anything in front of the passenger air bag "
" indicator, because it may block the driver's view of important air bag status information.
Main components of the ODS
-
A detection device is located inside the front passenger seat cushion.
-
An electronic system determines whether the front passenger air bag system should be activated or deactivated.
-
An indicator light on the overhead console displays the words PASSENGER AIR BAG "
" when the front passenger air bag system is deactivated. -
The overhead console air bag warning indicator is connected with the ODS.
If the front passenger seat is occupied by a person the system determines to be of appropriate size, and that person is seated correctly, the PASSENGER AIR BAG "
" indicator will turn off. In this condition, the front passenger air bag will be able to inflate if necessary during a frontal crash.
For correct detection in the Kia Seltos, the passenger should sit upright with the seatback in an upright position, centered on the seat cushion, wearing the seat belt properly, with legs comfortably extended and feet on the floor.
You will find the PASSENGER AIR BAG "
" indicator on the overhead console. The system detects the conditions listed in the related table and activates or deactivates the front passenger air bag based on those conditions.
Always make sure that you and all occupants are seated and restrained correctly. For the best protection from the air bag and safety belt systems in the Kia Seltos, occupants should sit upright, keep the seatback upright, remain centered on the seat cushion, place both feet on the floor, and wear the seat belt properly.
The ODS may not function correctly if the passenger does anything that interferes with the detection system. These actions include:
-
Failing to sit in an upright position.
-
Leaning against the door or center console.
-
Sitting toward the side or front edge of the seat.
-
Putting legs on the dashboard or resting them in a way that reduces weight on the front passenger seat.
-
Wearing the safety belt incorrectly.
-
Reclining the seatback too far.
To help the Kia Seltos ODS work as intended, do not place heavy objects, electronic devices, seat cushions, or aftermarket covers on the front passenger seat unless they are approved for safe use with the system.
