Kia Seltos: Child Restraint System (CRS) / Children always in the rear

Contents:

Children under age 13 must always ride in the rear seats and must be properly restrained to reduce the risk of injury during an accident, sudden stop, or sudden maneuver.

Kia Seltos warning not to install a child restraint on the front passenger seat

WARNING

Restraint location

Never install a child or infant seat on the front passenger seat. A child seated in the front passenger position can be struck forcefully by an inflating air bag and may be seriously or fatally injured.

Kia Seltos warning that a child restraint can become hot in a closed vehicle

WARNING

Hot child restraint

A Child Restraint System can become very hot if it is left inside a closed Kia Seltos on a sunny day. Before placing a child in the restraint, check the seat cover, buckle, latch plates, and other contact areas for heat.

Accident statistics show that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seats rather than in the front seat. Even with air bags, children can be seriously injured or killed if they ride in the front. Children who are too large for a child restraint must use the available seat belts correctly.

All 50 states have child restraint laws that require children to travel in approved child restraint devices. Age, height, and weight requirements for using seat belts instead of child restraints vary by state, so you should understand the laws where you live and where you plan to travel.

The CRS must be properly placed and installed in the rear seat. Use only a commercially available Child Restraint System that meets the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

A CRS is designed to be secured in a vehicle seat using the lap belt portion of a lap/shoulder belt or by using the LATCH system in the rear seats of the Kia Seltos.

Before every trip, confirm that the child restraint is firmly attached, the child is correctly buckled, and the restraint matches the child's age, height, and weight.

CRS

Infants and younger children must be secured in an appropriate rear-facing or forward-facing Child Restraint System (CRS) that has been properly installed in the rear seat of the Kia Seltos. Always read, understand, and follow the installation and use instructions provided by the CRS manufacturer.

A correctly installed CRS helps keep the child in the proper position and allows the vehicle's restraint systems to work more effectively during sudden braking, evasive maneuvers, or a collision.

Kia Seltos warning about proper child restraint system installation in the rear seat

WARNING

Child restraint installation

An improperly secured child restraint can increase the risk of serious injury or death in an accident. Always follow these precautions when using a CRS in the Kia Seltos:

  • Always follow the CRS manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.

  • Always secure your child properly inside the child restraint before driving.

  • If the headrest prevents correct child seat installation, as described in the CRS manual, readjust or completely remove the headrest for that seating position when permitted and necessary.

  • Do not use an infant carrier or child safety seat that only hooks over a seatback, because it may not provide adequate protection during an accident.

  • A child restraint installed in the center seating position may contact or press against the seat belt buckles. This can damage the buckles or make them unsafe to use. Always check that the CRS does not touch or push against any seat belt buckle.

  • Inspect the child restraint regularly to make sure it has not shifted and is still securely attached in the Kia Seltos rear seat.
