Kia K4: Seat belts / Seat belt restraint system

Contents:

To ensure maximum protection, occupants must wear their seat belts whenever the Kia K4 is in motion:

  • The shoulder belt should be adjusted to rest midway over the shoulder and across the collarbone, never against the neck.

  • For safety reasons, never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. Please refer to the "Child Restraint System (CRS)" section of your Kia K4 owner's manual for detailed guidance on appropriate child seating.

WARNING

Twisted seat belt

Ensure that your Kia K4 seat belt is not twisted before fastening. A twisted belt may fail to distribute crash forces properly, potentially cutting into your body and causing severe injury during an impact.

WARNING

Shoulder belt positioning

  • Never route the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An improperly positioned shoulder belt fails to provide the necessary protection during a crash.

  • Always secure both the shoulder and lap portions of the belt to maintain the integrity of the restraint system.

WARNING

Damaged seat belt assembly

Any damage to the webbing, buckles, or anchor points can compromise the safety of your Kia K4. The entire seat belt assembly must be replaced if any part of the hardware is damaged, or if the system has been subjected to a collision, even if no visible damage is present.

Always ensure your belt is adjusted as firmly as possible without compromising comfort. A slack belt significantly reduces the protection provided by the Kia K4 safety systems.

To maintain your seat belts, avoid contaminating the webbing with polishes, oils, or chemicals—specifically battery acid. Clean only with mild soap and water. You must replace the belt if it becomes frayed, contaminated, or shows signs of wear:

  • Do not make unauthorized modifications that prevent the automatic adjustment or retracting mechanisms of the Kia K4 seat belt assembly from operating correctly.

  • When fastening, confirm you have latched into the correct buckle for your seat. Cross-latching into another seat's buckle is dangerous and will not provide proper protection.

  • Never fasten or unfasten your seat belt while the vehicle is in motion, as this can lead to a loss of control and result in a collision.

  • Ensure the belt path is clear of any hard objects or accessories that could impede its proper function over your clothing.

WARNING

Seat belt buckle maintenance

Keep the Kia K4 buckle receptor free of foreign materials such as food crumbs, coins, or spilled liquids. Obstructions can prevent the belt from latching securely and may cause the system to fail in an emergency.

Seat belt warning

Your Kia K4 is equipped with a comprehensive seat belt warning system designed to ensure the safety of all occupants by monitoring seat belt status and providing both visual and audible alerts under specific conditions.

Driver’s seat belt warning

To remind the driver to buckle up, the seat belt warning light on the Kia K4 instrument cluster will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds each time you press the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position, regardless of the current status of the seat belt. If the seat belt remains unfastened, an audible warning chime will sound for the same 6-second duration.

If you begin operating your Kia K4 at speeds between approximately 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h) without the driver's seat belt fastened, the corresponding warning light will appear. This light will automatically extinguish if the vehicle speed drops below 5 mph (9 km/h).

Should you drive the Kia K4 at speeds of approximately 12 mph (20 km/h) or faster while unbuckled, or if you unfasten the belt while driving at these speeds, the warning light will blink continuously and the warning chime will sound for approximately 100 seconds. If the belt is unfastened at lower speeds (between 5 and 12 mph), the warning light will display, but the blinking and chime will not commence until the vehicle speed exceeds 12 mph (20 km/h).

Front passenger’s seat belt warning

The Kia K4 also monitors the front passenger seating position. The warning light will illuminate for 6 seconds upon turning the ENGINE START/STOP button to ON as a standard system check. If the vehicle is in motion between 5 mph (9 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h) without the front passenger belt fastened, the warning light will activate, turning off only when speed drops below 5 mph (9 km/h).

At speeds of 12 mph (20 km/h) or higher, if the front passenger seat belt is not fastened—or if it is unfastened during transit—the Kia K4 will trigger a blinking warning light and an audible chime for approximately 100 seconds. Similar to the driver's side, unfastening at speeds below 12 mph will only trigger the static warning light until that speed threshold is crossed.

TIP

  • The seat belt warning light will always appear for approximately 6 seconds during the system power-on sequence, even if the front passenger seat in your Kia K4 is completely unoccupied.

  • Please note that the front passenger seat belt warning system may activate if heavy luggage, groceries, or other objects are placed on the front passenger seat, as the sensor may register the weight as a passenger.

Rear passenger’s seat belt warning:

  2. Center occupant
  3. Right side occupant

To ensure rear-seat safety, the Kia K4 includes a reminder system for all rear occupants. The warning light illuminates for 6 seconds whenever the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is turned ON, regardless of whether the belts are secured.

If you begin driving the Kia K4 without the rear belts fastened, the seat belt warning light will blink for approximately 70 seconds. If a rear passenger unfastens their belt while driving under 12 mph (20 km/h), the light will blink for 70 seconds. If this occurs while driving at speeds exceeding 12 mph (20 km/h), the system will provide both an audible chime for 35 seconds and a blinking warning light.

Note on rear door activity: For your convenience, if a rear door is opened or closed while the Kia K4 is traveling under 6 mph (10 km/h), the system will suppress the rear seat belt warning lights and sounds, even if you subsequently accelerate to over 12 mph (20 km/h).

Seat belt - Driver's 3-point system with emergency locking retractor

Buckling your seat belt

Correct method for fastening the 3-point seat belt in a Kia K4

To secure your seat belt in the Kia K4, pull the belt webbing steadily out from the retractor and insert the metal locking tab (1) into the corresponding buckle (2). A distinct "click" sound confirms that the tab has successfully locked into the Kia K4 seat belt buckle.

The seat belt system automatically adjusts to your movement after you manually ensure the lap belt portion is positioned low and snug across your hips. During normal driving, the retractor allows for freedom of movement if you lean forward slowly. However, in the event of a sudden stop, collision, or if you lean forward abruptly, the Kia K4 emergency locking retractor will engage to secure you in place.

WARNING

Always position the lap belt portion as low as possible and snugly across your pelvic area. Positioning the lap belt over your abdomen may significantly increase the risk of internal injury during a collision.

To ensure optimal safety in the Kia K4, the arm closest to the door should be positioned over the shoulder belt, while the other arm should remain under the lap portion. Never route the shoulder belt under the arm closest to the vehicle door.

NOTE

If you encounter resistance when attempting to pull the seat belt from the Kia K4 retractor, let the belt retract fully, then pull it out again with a smooth, steady motion.

Releasing the seat belt

To release, press the red release button (1) located on the locking buckle.

Upon release, the Kia K4 seat belt should automatically retract into the housing. If it does not retract smoothly, inspect the webbing to ensure it is not twisted, then attempt to retract it again.

Adjusting the height of the shoulder belt

The shoulder belt anchor in your Kia K4 can be adjusted to one of four height positions to provide a personalized fit, enhancing both comfort and safety.

Adjusting the shoulder belt height anchor in the Kia K4

For maximum protection, the shoulder portion should be adjusted to lie flat across your chest and midway over your shoulder. It should never be too close to your neck. To adjust the height of the Kia K4 seat belt anchor:

  • To raise: Simply pull the height adjuster upward (1).
  • To lower: Push the adjuster downward (2) while simultaneously pressing the release button (3).

Release the button to lock the anchor into the desired slot. Always slide the adjuster firmly to verify it is locked in place.

WARNING

Verify that the shoulder belt anchor is securely locked at the selected height. Never allow the shoulder belt to cross your neck or face, or route it under your arm, as an improperly positioned belt can lead to severe injury in the Kia K4.

WARNING

Following a collision, the entire seat belt assembly must be inspected and likely replaced, even if no visible damage is found. Always replace any Kia K4 seat belts that show signs of wear or fail to function correctly.

A properly buckled seat belt must be locked into the buckle corresponding to the specific seat cushion occupied.

WARNING

Before buckling any rear seat belts in the Kia K4, always verify that the metal latch matches the correct buckle. Forcing a side seat belt into the center buckle will not provide proper restraint in the event of an accident.

Stowing the rear seat belt

When not in use, the rear Kia K4 seat belt buckles can be tucked into the designated pockets between the rear seat cushion and the seatback to prevent rattling and improve interior aesthetics.

Pretensioner seat belt

Kia K4 pretensioner seat belt system mechanism illustration

Your Kia K4 is equipped with advanced pretensioner seat belts for the front driver and passenger, as well as for passengers in the 2nd row. This critical safety technology is designed to ensure that the seat belt fits tightly against the occupant's body at the onset of certain severe collisions, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of the restraint system.

The Kia K4 pretensioner system may activate during collisions where the impact force is severe enough to warrant supplemental restraint. Under normal driving conditions, if the vehicle stops suddenly or if an occupant leans forward too rapidly, the standard seat belt retractor locks to prevent excess belt extension. However, in specific frontal or side-impact collisions, the pretensioner will trigger to instantly retract the belt webbing, pulling the occupant into a more secure, upright position against the seat.

If the system detects excessive tension on the driver, front passenger, or rear outboard seat belts during activation, an integrated load limiter inside the Kia K4 retractor assembly will carefully release a small amount of pressure to help manage the forces applied to the occupant's chest.

WARNING

For your maximum safety, always ensure that your seat belt webbing is not loose, worn, or twisted. Always maintain an upright, proper seating position in your Kia K4 to allow the restraint systems to function as intended.

TIP

The Kia K4 pretensioner system may activate in both frontal and side-impact collisions, or even in rollover events, provided the vehicle is equipped with the corresponding side or curtain air bag systems.

CAUTION

Skin irritation awareness

If the pretensioner systems in your Kia K4 have been activated during an accident, you may notice fine dust particles in the cabin. Wash all exposed skin areas thoroughly with mild soap and water. Avoid prolonged inhalation of this dust, as it can cause temporary respiratory or skin irritation.

TIP

  • The driver’s and front passenger’s pretensioner systems in the Kia K4 are designed to coordinate with the SRS air bag sensors. Consequently, the SRS air bag warning light SRS warning light icon for Kia K4 will illuminate for approximately 3–6 seconds whenever you turn the ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position as part of a routine system self-check.

  • If the pretensioner system experiences a malfunction, the SRS warning light will remain illuminated or appear while driving, even if the air bags themselves are functional. If the light does not illuminate during startup, stays on longer than 6 seconds, or illuminates during travel, please have your Kia K4 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer immediately.

WARNING

Never attempt to service, inspect, or repair the pretensioner seat belt system yourself. Any maintenance or replacement of the Kia K4 pretensioner assemblies must be performed exclusively by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure system integrity.

CAUTION

Hot pretensioner components

After a collision in which the pretensioners have fired, the assemblies will be extremely hot. Do not touch or attempt to handle the pretensioner mechanisms for several minutes, as this can result in skin burns.

Please note that pretensioner seat belts in the Kia K4 are single-use safety devices. Following any activation, the entire pretensioner assembly must be replaced by an authorized Kia dealer to maintain the safety standards of your vehicle.
