Kia K4: Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA): / Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist operation

Contents:

To ensure maximum safety, the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist system in the Kia K4 utilizes tiered intervention strategies based on the assessed risk level:

  • Collision Warning: Active notifications to alert the driver.

  • Emergency Braking: Automatic application of brakes to mitigate impact.

  • Vehicle Stabilization: Stopping the vehicle and modulating brake control to ensure safety.

Collision Warning

  1. Collision Warning

When a hazard is detected, the Kia K4 Collision Warning system provides a multi-sensory alert, including an illuminated warning indicator on the outside rearview mirror, an on-screen warning message, an audible tone, and haptic feedback through steering wheel vibration.

This warning will also be mirrored on the Kia K4 infotainment system display for clarity.

The system is designed to trigger the Collision Warning when the following criteria are met:

  • Your Kia K4 transmission is in R (Reverse) and your vehicle speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h).

  • An approaching vehicle is detected within an approximate range of 82 ft (25 m) from the left or right side of your Kia K4.

  • The approaching vehicle is moving at a speed exceeding 3 mph (5 km/h).

TIP

  • If the operational parameters are met, the Kia K4 will issue a warning even if your current vehicle speed is 0 mph (stationary).

  • Visual elements and color schemes of these warnings may adapt based on the selected theme or configuration of your Kia K4 instrument cluster.

Emergency Braking

  1. Emergency Braking

The Collision Warning system in your Kia K4 actively alerts you to potential hazards by activating a warning light on the outside rearview mirror, displaying a notification on the infotainment system screen, triggering an audible chime, and initiating a subtle vibration in the steering wheel.

Emergency Braking serves as a critical safety layer, designed to automatically assist in preventing or minimizing collisions with vehicles approaching your Kia K4 from the left or right while in reverse.

Emergency Braking intervention occurs when all of the following conditions are met:

  • The Kia K4 transmission is shifted into R (Reverse) and the vehicle is traveling at a speed below 5 mph (8 km/h).

  • A vehicle is detected approaching from the left or right side at a distance of approximately 5 ft (1.5 m) from your Kia K4.

  • The approaching vehicle is moving at a speed greater than 3 mph (5 km/h).

TIP

The system will automatically conclude brake control under these scenarios:

  • The approaching vehicle moves outside the radar detection range.

  • The approaching vehicle successfully passes behind your Kia K4.

  • The approaching vehicle alters its trajectory and is no longer driving toward your Kia K4.

  • The approaching vehicle decelerates or stops.

  • You apply the brake pedal manually with sufficient force, indicating driver awareness.

Stopping the vehicle and ending brake control

  1. Drive carefully

Should the Emergency Braking system bring your Kia K4 to a halt, an urgent warning message will appear on the instrument cluster. You must immediately take control by applying the brake pedal manually and surveying your surroundings to ensure the path is clear.

  • Brake control will automatically release approximately 2 seconds after the Kia K4 is brought to a complete stop.

  • If you press the brake pedal excessively during the emergency braking sequence, the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist system will interpret this as driver intervention and immediately cancel the automated brake control.

WARNING

  • For your safety, always adjust vehicle settings only after the Kia K4 is parked in a secure location.

  • The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist alerts may be suppressed if another high-priority system warning is active simultaneously.

  • Audible alerts from the Kia K4 may not be perceptible in high-noise environments.

  • The system may not initiate braking if the driver has already manually applied the brakes to avoid the hazard.

  • During an automated braking event, the vehicle may come to a sudden stop. Ensure all occupants are wearing seat belts and all loose objects in the Kia K4 are properly secured to prevent injury.

  • The standard mechanical braking system of your Kia K4 remains fully functional even if a fault is detected in the Collision-Avoidance Assist system.

WARNING

  • The system will automatically cancel braking intervention if you press the accelerator pedal excessively, as it assumes you intend to move the vehicle.

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist is a supplementary system; it cannot operate in every scenario and does not guarantee the avoidance of all collisions.

  • Warning timing may vary or be delayed depending on specific road conditions, visibility, and weather factors influencing the Kia K4 sensors.

  • As the driver, you retain full responsibility for the vehicle. Never rely exclusively on the assistance system. Always maintain a safe distance and be prepared to intervene by braking manually.

  • Do not depend on this system to avoid collisions with pedestrians, animals, or small objects, as doing so could result in severe injury or death.

TIP

Automated brake control may be limited or unavailable if the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is malfunctioning or deactivated. Alerts will typically only be provided if the ESC warning light is illuminated or if the ESC is currently occupied by another active function.

NOTE

  • If the Kia K4 system initiates emergency braking, you must immediately confirm that the vehicle is stopped, apply the brake pedal, and verify that the area is clear before continuing.

  • Following a shift into R (Reverse), the emergency brake control is configured to operate once for hazards approaching from the left and once for hazards approaching from the right.

CRITICAL CARGO AREA WARNING — LETHAL EXHAUST FUME INTRUSION: Operating your vehicle while the rear hatch or liftgate is unlatched, open, or slightly ajar creates a dangerous aerodynamic low-pressure vortex at the rear of the cabin. This vacuum effect will actively draw toxic exhaust emissions, including odorless and lethal carbon monoxide gases, directly into the passenger compartment, which can cause serious physiological injury, permanent neurological damage, or the death of the vehicle occupants inside your Kia K4.
