LOCK
In this position, the Kia K4 steering wheel is mechanically locked to deter theft. The ignition key can only be inserted or removed when the switch is in this position.
ACC (Accessory)
When the ignition is turned to ACC, the steering wheel lock is disengaged, allowing for the operation of certain electrical accessories, such as the audio system, while the engine remains off.
TIP
If you encounter resistance when attempting to turn the Kia K4 ignition switch to the ACC position, gently rotate the steering wheel left and right while turning the key. This action releases the pressure on the steering lock mechanism, allowing the key to turn smoothly.
ON
Use this position to verify that all instrument cluster warning lights are functional before starting the Kia K4 engine.
This is the designated operational position once the engine is running and the vehicle is in use.
NOTE
To prevent premature discharge of the 12V battery, avoid leaving the ignition switch in the ON position for extended periods when the engine is not running.
START
Turn and hold the ignition switch to the START position to crank and ignite the Kia K4 engine.
The starter motor will engage as long as you hold the key in this position; once the engine fires and you release the key, it will automatically spring back to the ON position.
This position also serves as a functional check for the brake warning light system.
WARNING
Never rotate the ignition switch to the LOCK or ACC position while the Kia K4 is in motion (except in a dire emergency). Doing so will cause the steering wheel to lock, result in a loss of directional control, and significantly reduce your braking capability, potentially causing a catastrophic accident.
Before exiting your Kia K4, always ensure the transmission is firmly in P (Park), apply the parking brake completely, and switch the ignition to the OFF position. Failure to follow these steps may lead to unintended vehicle movement.
Do not attempt to reach through the steering wheel to manipulate the ignition switch or other controls while driving. Your arm's presence in that area can restrict steering movement, leading to a loss of control, severe injury, or death.
Keep the driver's footwell clear. Do not place loose objects around the seat, as they can slide forward and interfere with pedal operation, which could cause a dangerous accident.
Anti-theft steering column lock:
The steering wheel of your Kia K4 is designed to lock when in the LOCK position to provide an additional layer of security against theft.
The steering column will automatically lock once the driver's door is opened after the ignition is turned off.
If the Kia K4 steering wheel fails to lock upon opening the driver's door, a warning chime will sound. Please attempt the locking procedure again.
If the lock failure persists, please contact an authorized Kia dealer for a professional inspection of your Kia K4 security systems.
If the vehicle is in the LOCK position but the driver's door remains open, the steering wheel will not lock, and a chime will sound to alert you. Simply close the driver's door to engage the steering lock and silence the warning chime.
Starting the gasoline engine in your Kia K4
Ensure that the parking brake is firmly applied to prevent any unintended movement before starting your Kia K4.
Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) / Automatic Transmission: Ensure the gear selector is shifted to P (Park).
Depress the brake pedal fully. While P (Park) is the recommended position, you may also start the Kia K4 engine when the gear selector is in N (Neutral).
Turn the ignition switch to the START position and hold it until the engine begins to run (for a maximum of 10 seconds).
It is important that you do not depress the accelerator pedal while starting your Kia K4.
Do not attempt to warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. To ensure long-term engine health, start driving at moderate engine speeds immediately after the engine is running. Avoid sudden acceleration or deceleration to allow all mechanical components in your Kia K4 to reach optimal operating temperatures smoothly.
WARNING
Always wear appropriate footwear when operating your Kia K4. Unsuitable shoes, such as high heels, ski boots, or loose sandals, may interfere with your ability to press the pedals precisely and safely.
Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. Doing so may cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly, which could lead to an accident.
Wait until the engine RPM stabilizes to a normal idle speed before driving. If you release the brake pedal while the engine RPM is high (during the initial cold start phase), the Kia K4 may move suddenly, potentially causing a loss of control.
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while you are in motion, do not attempt to shift the transmission to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, shift to N (Neutral) while the Kia K4 is still moving, and then turn the ignition switch to the START position to attempt to restart the engine.
Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds at a time. If the engine stalls or fails to start, wait approximately 5–10 seconds before attempting to start the Kia K4 again. Repeated or prolonged use of the starter may cause serious damage to the starting system.
Never turn the ignition switch to the START position while the engine is already running. This can cause severe damage to the starter assembly.
