Display and control
The operational status of the Highway Driving Assist (HDA) system in your Kia K4 is clearly visible within the "Driving Assist" view on the instrument cluster. For a deeper understanding of how these visual cues are organized, please refer to the "LCD display modes" section of your owner’s manual.

|
The Highway Driving Assist status is communicated to the driver through the following indicators on the Kia K4 instrument cluster:
Highway Driving Assist Indicator: Displays whether a vehicle is detected ahead and shows the currently selected following distance level.
Green: The system is actively operating.
Gray: The system is in standby mode, waiting for proper conditions.
White blinking: Indicates that the accelerator pedal is engaged by the driver, overriding the system.
Unlit: The function is completely OFF.
Set Speed: Indicates the target cruising speed defined by the driver.
Vehicle Detection and Headway: Visual confirmation of a lead vehicle and the distance gap settings.
Lane Detection Status: Confirms whether the system has successfully identified lane markings.
Lane Following Assist (LFA) Indicator: Shows the active state of the lane-centering feature.
TIP
For additional details regarding specific display symbols, icons, and color-coding, refer to the "Lane Following Assist (LFA)" and "Smart Cruise Control (SCC)" chapters.
Please note that the visual appearance of these indicators in the Kia K4 may vary depending on your selected instrument cluster theme or specific hardware configuration.
Turning on Highway Driving Assist
To ensure optimal performance in your Kia K4, Highway Driving Assist functions only when specific criteria are met:
Press the "Drive Assist" button to activate Highway Driving Assist while driving on supported controlled-access highways.
If you are entering a highway main road while Smart Cruise Control is active, please be aware that Highway Driving Assist will not engage if the Lane Following Assist (LFA) feature has been turned OFF.
Restarting after stopping
|
|
When Highway Driving Assist is active, the Kia K4 will automatically bring the vehicle to a full stop if the car ahead stops. If the lead vehicle resumes motion within 30 seconds, your Kia K4 will automatically start following it. If the stop lasts longer than 30 seconds, a notification appears on the instrument cluster. To resume driving, either press the accelerator pedal or toggle the (+), (-), or (RES) switches on the steering wheel.
Hands-off warning
|
|
|
|
To ensure safe operation of your Kia K4, the system continuously monitors steering input. If you remove your hands from the steering wheel for several seconds, the Kia K4 will provide a multi-stage warning to regain your attention:
First stage: An informative warning message appears on the instrument cluster advising you to place your hands back on the wheel.
Second stage: The warning message intensifies, displaying a red steering wheel icon accompanied by a continuous audible chime.
|
|
If you fail to return your hands to the steering wheel after the multi-stage warning sequence, the Highway Driving Assist (HDA) system in your Kia K4 will automatically cancel to prevent unsafe operation.
Driving the speed limit
|
|
Once the hands-off warning leads to the cancellation of Highway Driving Assist, the Kia K4 will initiate a speed-limiting function for your protection. During this phase, a persistent warning message is displayed on the instrument cluster, and an audible alarm sounds continuously to urge the driver to resume control.
Driving to one side within lane:
|
When driving your Kia K4 at speeds above 40 mph (60 km/h), if another vehicle is detected in close proximity within an adjacent lane, the system will proactively provide subtle steering control to bias the vehicle toward the opposite side of the lane, enhancing lateral safety. Note that if vehicles are positioned closely on both sides of your Kia K4 simultaneously, this specific evasive steering assistance will be suppressed.
Highway Driving Assist standby
If the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) component of the Kia K4 is temporarily interrupted while Highway Driving Assist is active, the system enters a standby mode. In this state, the Lane Following Assist (LFA) feature will continue to operate independently to help keep the vehicle centered.
NOTE
The "Driving Speed Limit" function may restrict the Kia K4 to speeds below 40 mph (60 km/h). In this mode, the vehicle will decelerate if a car ahead slows down, but it will not automatically resume acceleration. You must take manual control to accelerate.
The "Driving Speed Limit" function will automatically cancel in the following scenarios:
Once you grasp the steering wheel firmly.
When you re-enable Lane Following Assist by pressing the appropriate steering wheel button.
When you operate the (+), (-), (RES) switches, the Cancel button, or when you depress the accelerator or brake pedal of the Kia K4.
Display and control
The operational status of the Highway Lane Change Assist (HLCA) system is conveniently displayed directly on the instrument cluster of your Kia K4. For a comprehensive overview of how these status updates are presented, please refer to the "LCD display modes" section of your owner's manual.
The status of the Highway Lane Change Assist in your Kia K4 is categorized as follows:
|
|
Highway Lane Change Assist Indicator: Provides status icons on the Kia K4 dashboard:
Lane Line Display: The lane markings on your Kia K4 display mirror the color-coding of the HLCA indicator. When the system is in Standby, it will also visually represent the availability of lane detection.
Green Arrow and Lane Shade: A visual green arrow and lane highlighting appear after the system initiates the maneuver and remain until the lane change in your Kia K4 is successfully completed.
Status Messages:
You can enable or disable the Highway Lane Change Assist feature in your Kia K4 by using the "Driving Assist" or "Lane Driving Assist" button on your steering wheel.
Turning ON Highway Lane Change Assist
|
|
The Highway Lane Change Assist feature in your Kia K4 is fully ready to operate when the function is enabled and the following environmental and system conditions are met:
The instrument cluster does not display the hands-off warning for your Kia K4.
Hazard lights are currently OFF.
TIP
While the Lane Change Assist function is ON, the Lane Following Assist feature will remain active and will not cancel, even if the turn signal indicator or the hazard lights are currently in operation.
Highway Lane Change Assist automatically turns OFF in your Kia K4 when you encounter the following driving conditions:
You are driving on a road with only a single driving lane.
The road lacks physical center separation structures, such as guardrails or median barriers.
A pedestrian or a cyclist is detected on the road ahead by the Kia K4 sensors.
If you reduce your speed below 15 mph (25 km/h) while Lane Change Assist is ready, the system status will automatically change to standby mode.
When driving at speeds between 20-40 mph (30-60 km/h), if the Kia K4 fails to detect other vehicles in the left or right adjacent lanes, the Lane Change Assist status will revert to standby.
The system status changes to standby immediately if a risk of collision is detected by the sensors.
Please be aware that visual elements, such as icons or colors, may display differently depending on the specific instrument cluster theme or hardware specifications of your Kia K4.
WARNING
When Highway Lane Change Assist in your Kia K4 turns OFF, Steering Assist is temporarily canceled. Always remain vigilant and maintain manual control when driving.
