Kia K4: Driving your vehicle / ENGINE START/STOP button

Contents:

The ENGINE START/STOP button in your Kia K4 is designed for convenience; it automatically illuminates whenever a front door is opened. The light will remain active for approximately 30 seconds after the door is closed. Furthermore, the illumination will deactivate immediately once the Kia K4 theft-alarm system is successfully armed.

ENGINE START/STOP button interface inside the Kia K4 cabin

Your Kia K4 features four distinct ignition modes, allowing you to manage vehicle power and engine status effortlessly.

OFF

  • To shut down the Kia K4 engine, shift the transmission to P (Park) and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to transition from the START/RUN position to the OFF position.

  • To completely power down the Kia K4 electronics, ensure the vehicle is in P (Park) and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to move from the ON position to the OFF position.

  • For safety, if you attempt to press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the Kia K4 is not in P (Park), the system will default to the ACC position rather than turning the power completely OFF.

Anti-theft steering column lock

  • To provide robust security, the Kia K4 steering wheel automatically locks when the ENGINE START/STOP button is set to the OFF position.

  • The steering column will also engage the lock mechanism when the driver's door is opened.

  • If the steering wheel fails to lock correctly upon opening the door, an audible warning chime will sound. Please attempt to lock the wheel again. If the issue persists, we recommend having your Kia K4 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • Note that if you press the ENGINE START/STOP button in the OFF position after the door has been opened, the steering wheel will remain unlocked and a chime will sound. To secure the vehicle, simply close the driver's door; this will trigger the steering lock and silence the warning chime.

NOTE

If the Kia K4 steering wheel does not unlock as expected, the ENGINE START/STOP button will remain unresponsive. To resolve this, gently rotate the steering wheel left and right while pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button to release the tension on the locking pin.

TIP

  • The ENGINE START/STOP button will only toggle vehicle power or engine ignition when the Kia K4 is stationary.

  • In a rare emergency situation while driving, you can force the Kia K4 to shut down by either pressing and holding the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 2 seconds, or by pressing the button 3 times in rapid succession within 3 seconds.

  • If your Kia K4 is still moving, you can restart the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button while the vehicle speed is 3 mph (5 km/h) or above.

ACC (Accessory)

When your Kia K4 is placed in the ACC position, the steering wheel lock is disengaged, and various electrical accessories, such as the audio and infotainment systems, become operational. Please be aware that using these electrical systems while the engine is turned off will gradually drain the 12V battery.

To engage the ACC mode in your Kia K4, press the ENGINE START/STOP button once while in the OFF position, ensuring that you do not engage the brake pedal.

If the Kia K4 ENGINE START/STOP button remains in the ACC position for more than one hour, the vehicle will automatically shut off all power to prevent excessive battery discharge.

ON

When the Kia K4 is in the ON position, the electrical systems are fully energized. To enter the ON mode from the OFF position, press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice without engaging the brake pedal.

Important instrument cluster warning lights will illuminate before the engine starts, allowing you to confirm their operational status. Do not leave the Kia K4 ENGINE START/STOP button in the ON position for an extended period before starting the engine, as this will consume significant power and may lead to a 12V battery discharge.

START/RUN

To start your Kia K4, firmly engage the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the gear selector is in P (Park) or N (Neutral). For optimal safety and to ensure the vehicle does not roll, always start the Kia K4 while in the P (Park) position.

TIP

If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button without engaging the brake pedal, the engine will not crank, and the system will cycle through the ignition positions as follows:

  • From OFF > ACC

  • From ON > OFF or ACC

WARNING

  • Never press the ENGINE START/STOP button while your Kia K4 is in motion. Doing so will result in a loss of directional control and braking assistance, which could lead to a severe accident.

  • Before you exit the driver's seat, always ensure the transmission is shifted to P (Park), the parking brake is fully applied, and the ENGINE START/STOP button is set to the OFF position. Your Kia K4 may move suddenly and unexpectedly if these critical safety precautions are ignored.

  • Never reach for the ENGINE START/STOP button or any other cabin controls through the steering wheel while the vehicle is in motion. The presence of your hand or arm in that area can restrict steering movement, resulting in a loss of vehicle control, an accident, or serious bodily injury.

  • Do not place any loose or movable objects around the Kia K4 driver's seat. These items may slide under the pedals while driving, interfering with your ability to brake or accelerate, which may cause a dangerous accident.

Starting the engine

  1. Ensure that you have the smart key on your person or placed securely inside the Kia K4 cabin so that it remains under your control.

  2. Firmly apply the parking brake to secure the vehicle.

  3. Ensure the transmission is shifted to P (Park). Firmly depress the brake pedal until it is fully engaged.

  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button without engaging the accelerator pedal to initiate the starting sequence of your Kia K4.

  5. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the Kia K4 remains stationary. It is best to begin driving at moderate engine speeds immediately. Avoid rapid acceleration and deceleration to allow the engine and transmission components to reach their optimal operating temperature gradually.

WARNING

  • Do not attempt to start the Kia K4 with the accelerator pedal engaged. The vehicle may move suddenly, which can lead to an accident.

  • Wait until the engine RPM drops to a normal idle level. The Kia K4 may move unexpectedly if you release the brake pedal while the RPM is still high.

NOTE

Turbocharger intercooler engine starting and stopping guidelines

  • Do not race the engine or accelerate the Kia K4 aggressively immediately after starting. If the engine is cold, allow it to idle for several seconds to ensure that sufficient oil lubrication is circulated throughout the turbocharger unit.

  • After driving at high speeds or over an extended duration, which places a higher load on the Kia K4 engine, allow the engine to idle for approximately 1 minute before turning it off. This idle period helps the turbocharger cool down, extending the component's lifespan.

  • Avoid turning off the Kia K4 engine immediately after subjecting it to a heavy load. Doing so may cause heat soak, which can result in severe damage to the engine or the turbocharger unit.

Starting the engine with smart key

Whenever the doors are opened or the ENGINE START/STOP button is pressed, your Kia K4 automatically checks for the presence of the authorized smart key.

If the smart key is not detected within the vehicle, the (Smart key not detected warning icon on Kia K4 instrument cluster) indicator and a corresponding message will appear on the instrument cluster. If all doors are closed and the key is missing, a chime will sound for 5 seconds. This alert will suppress while the vehicle is in motion. For your security and convenience, always ensure you have your smart key with you.

WARNING

The Kia K4 can only be started when the smart key is inside the vehicle. Never allow a child or any person unfamiliar with the vehicle's operation to interact with the ENGINE START/STOP button or related controls. Pressing the button while the smart key is present may result in unintended engine operation or dangerous vehicle movement.

CAUTION

If the engine stalls while your Kia K4 is in motion, do not attempt to shift into P (Park). If road conditions are safe, shift to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still coasting, and then press the ENGINE START/STOP button to attempt to restart the engine.

TIP

  • If the smart key battery is depleted or the key is not functioning correctly, you can start the Kia K4 by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button directly with the smart key body itself. When doing so, ensure the smart key makes contact with the button at a right angle.

  • If the brake light fuse is blown, normal starting procedures may be disabled. In this event, replace the fuse immediately. If a replacement is not available, you can start the Kia K4 by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button while in the ACC position for 10 seconds. While the vehicle can start without the brake pedal engaged in this specific emergency mode, for your safety, always engage the brake pedal whenever possible.
