Checking the engine oil level

Engine oil serves as the lifeblood of your Kia K4, responsible for lubricating moving parts, cooling internal components, and enabling the precise operation of various hydraulic systems within the engine. Minor engine oil consumption during normal operation is expected; therefore, it is necessary to check and refill your engine oil regularly. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule is the best way to prevent the chemical breakdown of the lubricant and ensure peak performance.

Follow this procedure to accurately check the engine oil level in your Kia K4:

  1. Ensure your Kia K4 is parked on level ground to guarantee an accurate measurement.

  2. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it reaches normal operating temperature.

  3. Turn OFF the engine, remove the oil filler cap, and pull out the dipstick. Wait approximately 15 minutes to allow the oil to drain completely back into the oil pan.

  4. Wipe the dipstick with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it fully into the guide tube.

  5. Pull the dipstick out once more and observe the oil level relative to the F (Full) and L (Low) indicators. If the oil is below the L line, carefully add enough of the specified engine oil to bring the level up to the F line.

    CAUTION

Be extremely cautious not to touch the radiator hose or other nearby hot surfaces while checking or adding oil to your Kia K4, as these components can reach temperatures sufficient to cause severe burns.

    NOTE

Always use a clean, lint-free cloth when wiping the dipstick. Even small amounts of debris or dirt on the gauge can introduce contaminants into the engine, leading to internal damage.

To keep your engine bay clean, always use a funnel when refilling to prevent spilling oil onto surrounding engine components. Use only engine oil that meets the specifications required for your Kia K4; refer to the "Recommended lubricants and capacities" section of your owner's manual for specific viscosity and grade requirements.

  • If you accidentally spill engine oil while adding or changing it, wipe the area clean immediately to prevent potential smoke or odors once the engine heats up.

  • Note that engine oil consumption may be slightly higher during the initial "break-in" period of a new Kia K4. This rate of consumption will typically stabilize after the first 4,000 miles (6,000 km) of driving.

  • Remember that oil consumption can fluctuate based on your unique driving habits, extreme climate conditions, heavy traffic density, and the quality of the oil used. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you check your oil level regularly and top it up as necessary to ensure the continued health of your Kia K4 engine.

Changing the engine oil and filter

Over time, the essential properties of engine oil—such as its ability to lubricate, prevent rust, cool internal components, and clean engine surfaces—gradually degrade. To maintain the health of your Kia K4 powertrain, it is imperative to have the engine oil and filter changed by an authorized Kia dealer in accordance with the guidance provided by the Engine Oil Life Management System or the prescribed maintenance schedule.

  • If you fail to follow the recommended schedule for replacing the oil in your Kia K4, the performance of the engine oil will diminish significantly. This deterioration can negatively affect internal engine components and overall longevity. Therefore, we strongly advise adhering to the factory-recommended service intervals.

  • For the engine in your Kia K4 to operate in peak condition, always use the factory-recommended engine oil and filter specifications. If you choose not to use the recommended oil and filter, you must replace them much more frequently, adhering to the Maintenance Under Severe Usage Conditions schedule.

  • The primary purpose of the maintenance schedule for engine oil replacement is to prevent chemical deterioration and additive depletion. This schedule is independent of normal oil consumption rates. Regardless of the interval, you should still check and top off your engine oil level regularly to ensure the engine remains properly protected.

WARNING

Used engine oil

Used engine oil poses health risks, as it may cause skin irritation or, in some cases, cancer if left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods. Studies have indicated that used motor oil contains chemical contaminants that have caused cancer in laboratory animal test groups. Always protect your skin by wearing gloves and washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water as soon as possible after handling used oil. Additionally, keep all used engine oil safely out of the reach of children and pets.

NOTE

  • If the oil pressure drops below safe levels due to insufficient engine oil in your Kia K4, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light (Kia K4 engine oil pressure low dashboard warning light) will illuminate.

When this occurs, the vehicle's enhanced engine protection system will activate, actively limiting engine power to prevent damage. If you continue to drive the Kia K4 while this protection system is active, the Malfunction Indicator Light (Kia K4 malfunction indicator dashboard warning light) will also appear on your instrument cluster.

  • Once the engine oil pressure is restored to the correct level and the engine is restarted, the warning lights and the power-limiting protection system will automatically deactivate.

CAUTION

Engine oil remains extremely hot for a significant period immediately after vehicle operation. To avoid the risk of severe thermal burns during an oil change, always perform the maintenance procedure after the engine oil has had sufficient time to cool down.

NOTE

Never introduce aftermarket additives into the engine oil of your Kia K4. Engine oil additives can fundamentally alter the chemical properties of the lubricant, potentially leading to increased friction, oil breakdown, and serious engine failure.

Kia K4 (CL4) 2025-2026 Owner's Manual: Immobilizer system

The advanced electronic immobilizer system integrated into your vehicle serves as a primary layer of security, designed to protect your vehicle from unauthorized use and potential theft. This anti-theft configuration relies on an encrypted transponder chip embedded within your official smart key. If an improperly coded key, cloned fob, or any unauthorized bypass device is detected during an ignition sequence, the system immediately cuts off fuel delivery and ignition signals, ensuring that the vehicle's powertrain and electrical power system are completely disabled.
