The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is a convenience and safety feature designed to keep your Kia K4 securely stationary. After parking, applying the EPB effectively prevents any external forces from causing your Kia K4 to move unintentionally.
Applying the parking brake with EPB switch
|
Depress the brake pedal firmly.
Pull up on the EPB switch located on the center console.
Confirm the brake warning light is illuminated on the instrument cluster to ensure the Kia K4 is properly secured.
If the AUTO HOLD button is active when you turn off the Kia K4, the EPB will engage automatically. You can also manually apply the EPB by pulling up the switch after the ignition is turned off.
WARNING
Never leave children or animals unattended inside your Kia K4. They may unintentionally set the vehicle in motion by:
Releasing the electronic parking brake.
Shifting the transmission out of P (Park).
Starting the vehicle ignition.
Manipulating critical vehicle equipment.
TIP
If your Kia K4 does not remain at a complete standstill on a very steep incline or while towing a heavy trailer, you can maximize the braking force by:
Applying the standard EPB procedure.
Pulling up and holding the EPB switch for more than 3 seconds to engage maximum clamping force.
Do not engage the EPB while the Kia K4 is in motion, except in dire emergency situations.
You may hear a distinct electric motor whine or a "click" sound while the EPB is applying or releasing. This is perfectly normal and confirms that the electronic brake motor in your Kia K4 is functioning as intended.
Automatic application of EPB
The EPB system in the Kia K4 is designed to apply itself automatically under specific conditions to ensure vehicle safety:
Shifting into P (Park) while the Kia K4 is positioned on a slope.
Turning the ignition off while the AUTO HOLD function is currently enabled.
Detecting unintended vehicle movement while the transmission is in P (Park).
When AUTO HOLD is activated, the system may engage the EPB if:
The driver-side door is opened.
The hood is opened.
The trunk or liftgate is opened.
The Kia K4 has been stationary for more than approximately 10 minutes while on a steep slope.
Whenever other safety systems in the Kia K4 detect a request for EPB application.
NOTE
For Kia K4 models using the AUTO HOLD function, please be aware that the EPB will engage automatically if the ignition is set to the OFF position. For the smoothest operation, it is recommended to disable the AUTO HOLD function before turning the vehicle ignition to OFF.
Emergency braking with the EPB switch
Should you experience a failure of the primary brake pedal while driving your Kia K4, you can utilize the EPB for emergency deceleration. Simply pull up and maintain pressure on the EPB switch.
Note that emergency braking is only active as long as you continue to hold the EPB switch in the pulled-up position.
WARNING
Do not utilize the EPB while the Kia K4 is moving unless it is an absolute emergency. Engaging the EPB at normal highway speeds can result in a sudden loss of vehicle control, potentially leading to an accident, serious injury, or death. If you are forced to use this method to stop, do so with extreme caution.
TIP
During an emergency braking event initiated by the EPB, the brake warning light on the dashboard will illuminate to indicate the system is actively working to slow the Kia K4.
If the EPB has been deployed for an emergency stop, you must have your Kia K4 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure the braking system is safe for further operation.
Understanding how to properly release the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is essential for the smooth operation and longevity of your Kia K4.
Releasing the parking brake with EPB switch
|
Ensure the Kia K4 ignition is turned on.
Firmly engage and hold the brake pedal.
Push down on the EPB switch.
Verify that the brake warning light on the instrument cluster turns off, indicating the Kia K4 parking brake is fully released.
Automatic release of EPB
For added convenience, the EPB system in your Kia K4 can release automatically under specific operating conditions:
When the transmission is in P (Park): With the engine running, depress the brake pedal and shift the Kia K4 from P (Park) to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
When the transmission is in N (Neutral): With the engine running, depress the brake pedal and shift from N (Neutral) to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
For vehicles equipped with an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) or traditional Automatic Transmission (AT), the EPB will automatically release if the following safety prerequisites are met:
The Kia K4 engine is started.
The driver's side seatbelt is fastened.
The driver's door, hood, and trunk/liftgate are all securely closed.
You apply gentle pressure to the accelerator pedal while the transmission is in R (Reverse), D (Drive), or manual mode.
Always check the instrument cluster to confirm the brake warning light is extinguished before moving.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to drive the Kia K4 while the EPB remains applied. Driving with the parking brake engaged will cause accelerated wear on the brake pads and rotors, potentially leading to premature maintenance requirements.
NOTE
Do not rely on automatic release when driving on flat, level ground if you wish to maintain full control; your Kia K4 may move forward once the brake releases.
If the brake warning light remains illuminated after you have attempted to release the EPB, please contact an authorized Kia dealer to have your Kia K4 inspected.
The Kia K4 instrument cluster is designed to provide clear feedback regarding the status of your braking systems via specific warning messages and audible alerts.
An EPB warning and audible alert will trigger in the following scenarios:
You attempt to drive by pressing the accelerator pedal while the EPB is still applied, and the system fails to release it automatically.
A system conflict prevents the EPB from disengaging as requested.
|
|
Once these conditions are met, depress the brake pedal and manually release the EPB using the EPB switch.
TIP
Parking brake use
Never allow passengers or anyone unfamiliar with your Kia K4 to interact with the EPB switch. Accidental release of the parking brake can lead to dangerous, unintended vehicle movement.
Always verify the parking brake is fully engaged when exiting the Kia K4 to prevent any risk of rolling, which could endanger occupants or pedestrians.
You may hear a "click" or a faint electric motor whine when the EPB engages or releases. This is standard operation and indicates your Kia K4 parking system is working correctly.
When using valet services, always instruct the attendant on the proper operation of the electronic parking brake.
The EPB mechanism may experience a fault if the vehicle is driven while it is engaged.
When relying on the automatic release feature by engaging the accelerator, do so slowly to ensure a smooth transition.
When the conversion from AUTO HOLD to EPB fails to execute properly, the Kia K4 display will show the following warning:
|
|
NOTE
If this warning message appears, immediately depress the brake pedal to safely deactivate the AUTO HOLD function.
If the Kia K4 applies the EPB while AUTO HOLD is activated due to an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) signal, the system will provide the following visual and audio alert:
|
|
In the Kia K4, the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) system performs an automated self-diagnostic check. If the vehicle ignition is in the ON position, it is normal for the EPB warning light to illuminate briefly for approximately 3 seconds as part of this system check. If the light remains illuminated beyond this duration or triggers while driving, it indicates a potential issue that requires attention.
|
If the EPB malfunction indicator persists while you are operating the Kia K4, or if it fails to illuminate momentarily during the initial power-on cycle, it suggests a system fault. In such instances, you should have your Kia K4 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible to maintain braking safety.
Note that if the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) indicator is active due to an ESC system fault, the EPB malfunction indicator may also illuminate as a secondary effect. This interaction does not necessarily mean there is a separate malfunction with the EPB itself, but it should still be diagnosed by a professional.
NOTE
Occasionally, the EPB warning light may trigger due to a temporary electronic glitch in the EPB switch logic. If this occurs, cycle the engine off, wait a few minutes, and restart the Kia K4. If the warning light clears, the system has reset; however, if the light remains on, proceed to an authorized Kia dealer for a detailed scan.
If the EPB warning light blinks or fails to appear entirely when you pull up on the EPB switch, the system is signaling that the parking brake has failed to engage.
Should the warning light blink, attempt to reset the switch by pressing it down fully into its release position, then pulling it back up firmly. If the light continues to blink or fails to turn off, have your Kia K4 serviced immediately.
When the EPB is not released
If you find that the EPB will not release and the Kia K4 remains immobilized, do not attempt to force the vehicle to move. You must arrange for the Kia K4 to be transported via a flatbed tow truck to an authorized Kia dealer for professional recovery.
