  • Kia K4 shift selector: free movement zone You may move the gear selector freely within this gate.

Automatic transmission operation

To ensure consistent performance, always firmly engage the brake pedal when moving the selector from N (Neutral) to D (Drive) or R (Reverse). This protects the drivetrain components of your Kia K4 from unnecessary stress.

TIP

If the Kia K4 battery has been disconnected or replaced, you may notice that the first few automatic gear shifts feel slightly abrupt. This is a normal adaptive process: the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will automatically calibrate and optimize the shifting sequence after being cycled through the gears a few times under normal driving conditions.

WARNING

  • Always perform a visual check of your surroundings for pedestrians, especially children, before shifting the Kia K4 into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).

  • Before leaving the driver's seat, always shift the Kia K4 into P (Park), apply the parking brake fully, and ensure the vehicle is turned off. Failing to follow these steps may lead to unexpected and dangerous vehicle movement.

  • When using the manual shift mode on your Kia K4, be cautious when downshifting on slippery surfaces. Abrupt gear changes on icy or wet roads can cause the tires to lose traction, leading to a potential loss of control.

NOTE

  • To protect the transmission of your Kia K4, never accelerate while the transmission is in R (Reverse) or any forward gear while the brake pedal is depressed.

  • Do not shift from N (Neutral) or P (Park) to D (Drive) or R (Reverse) while the engine RPM is above a normal idle speed.

  • When stopped on an incline, do not rely on the engine or transmission power to keep the Kia K4 stationary; always use the service brake or the electronic parking brake.

  • The transmission's P (Park) gear is not a substitute for the parking brake. Always engage the parking brake when parking the Kia K4 on any incline.

TIP

If a technical issue occurs within the transmission system, the gear position indicator on the instrument cluster will begin to blink, and the vehicle may fail to move. If you encounter this, please have your Kia K4 inspected immediately by an authorized Kia dealer to identify and resolve the fault.

Transmission ranges

The transmission range indicator on the instrument cluster of your Kia K4 provides real-time information regarding the current gear shift position whenever the vehicle ignition is in the ON position. This ensures you always maintain awareness of the operational status of your Kia K4 drivetrain.

P (Park)

Always bring your Kia K4 to a complete and total stop before attempting to shift the transmission into P (Park). This specific position mechanically locks the transmission, effectively preventing the driven wheels from rotating while the vehicle is stationary.

NOTE

  • Attempting to shift your Kia K4 into P (Park) while the vehicle is still in motion will cause the drive wheels to lock immediately. This can cause severe mechanical damage to the transmission and lead to a dangerous loss of control.

  • Never treat P (Park) as a substitute for the parking brake. Always ensure the Kia K4 is in (Park) and fully engage the parking brake before exiting the driver’s seat.

  • For the safety of your family, never leave a child or pets unattended inside your Kia K4.

  • Shifting the gear to P (Park) while the vehicle is in motion may result in permanent damage to the transmission assembly.

R (Reverse)

Select the R (Reverse) position to maneuver your Kia K4 backward.

NOTE

Always bring your Kia K4 to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse). Engaging Reverse while the vehicle is still moving forward may cause transmission damage, except in the specific circumstances outlined in the "Special driving conditions" section of your manual.

N (Neutral)

In the N (Neutral) position, the wheels and transmission are disengaged. Your Kia K4 can roll freely, even on the slightest incline, unless you firmly apply the service brake or the parking brake.

WARNING

  • Always park the Kia K4 in P (Park) and apply the parking brake for maximum safety. Leaving the gear selector in N (Neutral) while parked can allow the vehicle to roll, potentially causing serious property damage or bodily injury.

  • Once you turn your Kia K4 to the OFF position, you will be unable to manually release the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

  • If you are using the AUTO HOLD function while driving your Kia K4, be aware that turning the vehicle to the OFF position will cause the EPB to apply automatically. It is recommended to turn off the AUTO HOLD function before switching the vehicle to the OFF position.

CAUTION

Do not drive, coast, or park your Kia K4 while in N (Neutral). Because the engine braking effect is not available in Neutral, you significantly reduce your ability to control the vehicle, which may lead to an accident.

D (Drive)

D (Drive) is the standard position for forward operation in your Kia K4. The transmission automatically shifts through an 8-gear sequence, intelligently balancing fuel economy with necessary power for various driving environments.

For rapid acceleration—such as when passing other vehicles or ascending steep inclines—fully depress the accelerator pedal. The Kia K4 transmission will automatically downshift to the next lowest gear to provide the required torque.

NOTE

Always bring your Kia K4 to a complete stop before shifting the transmission into D (Drive).

Manual mode

In manual mode, your Kia K4 offers you dynamic control over the drivetrain. By simply moving the gear shift lever forward or backward, you can execute rapid gear changes tailored to your driving style. Unlike a traditional manual transmission, this advanced system in the Kia K4 allows you to perform gearshifts even while the accelerator pedal is actively depressed, ensuring seamless transitions and continuous power delivery.

The gear shift lever of the Kia K4 positioned in the manual mode gate

To engage manual mode, push the gear shift lever from the D (Drive) position sideways into the manual gate. To return to standard automatic D (Drive) range operation, simply push the gear shift lever back into the main gate.

While in manual mode, moving the shift lever back and forth enables you to shift gears rapidly. As noted, manual mode allows you to maintain momentum by shifting gears while continuing to engage the accelerator pedal.

  • Up (+): Push the lever forward once to shift up to the next gear.

  • Down (-): Pull the lever backward once to shift down to the previous gear.

TIP

  • Always execute gear shifts in accordance with current road and traffic conditions, ensuring you keep the engine speed (RPM) within an appropriate and efficient range for your Kia K4.

  • Note that you can only manually select the 8 forward gears. To reverse or park your Kia K4, you must move the gear shift lever out of the manual gate and into the R (Reverse) or P (Park) positions as required.

  • The transmission will shift down automatically as your Kia K4 slows down. When you bring the vehicle to a complete stop, the 1st gear is selected automatically to assist with your next departure.

  • For powertrain protection, when the engine speed (RPM) becomes too high, the Kia K4 will adjust shift points and automatically upshift to prevent engine damage.

  • To maintain necessary levels of vehicle performance and occupant safety, the electronic control system may decline certain gear shift requests if it determines the action would be unsafe or outside the transmission's operating parameters.

  • When driving on a slippery road, push the gear shift lever forward into the Up (+) position to shift up one gear; this reduced wheel torque helps provide smoother traction on challenging surfaces. To return to the previous gear, push the lever into the Down (-) position.

Good driving practices

Adopting responsible and mindful driving habits is essential for the long-term reliability of your Kia K4 and ensuring the safety of all occupants on the road. Please observe the following practices to maintain optimal vehicle performance:

  • Never attempt to shift your Kia K4 from P (Park) or N (Neutral) into any other gear while the accelerator pedal is engaged.

  • Never attempt to shift the Kia K4 into P (Park) while the vehicle is in motion, as this can cause severe damage to the drivetrain.

  • Always ensure your Kia K4 has come to a complete and total stop before you attempt to select R (Reverse) or D (Drive).

  • Never shift the Kia K4 out of gear to "coast" down a hill. This is extremely hazardous, as you lose the benefits of engine braking and immediate throttle response. Always maintain the vehicle in gear while moving.

  • Do not constantly "ride" the brakes, as this leads to excessive heat buildup and potential brake malfunction. Instead, when descending long hills, reduce your speed and manually shift to a lower gear; this utilizes engine braking to assist in speed management for your Kia K4.

  • Always decelerate sufficiently before shifting to a lower gear to ensure the transmission can smoothly and correctly engage the desired ratio.

  • When driving in strong crosswinds, reduce your speed to maintain better stability and vehicle control over your Kia K4.

  • Exercise extreme caution when driving on slippery, icy, or wet surfaces. Be particularly gentle when braking, accelerating, or shifting gears. On such surfaces, any abrupt change in speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction, potentially resulting in a dangerous loss of control over the Kia K4.

  • Smoothly engage and release the accelerator pedal. A gradual approach to acceleration improves your Kia K4 performance, enhances passenger comfort, and optimizes overall fuel economy.

  • Always engage the electronic parking brake when parked. Do not rely solely on the P (Park) position to keep the Kia K4 stationary, especially when parking on inclines.

WARNING

  • When driving on steep gradients—whether uphill or downhill—always ensure your Kia K4 is in D (Drive) for forward motion or R (Reverse) for backward motion. Always verify the gear position displayed on the instrument cluster before moving. Driving against the direction of the selected gear can be extremely dangerous, as it may cause the engine to shut down and severely degrade your braking performance.

  • Always fasten your seatbelt securely! In the event of a collision, an unbelted occupant is significantly more likely to suffer serious injury or death than one who is properly belted in their Kia K4.

  • Avoid high speeds when turning, and never make sudden or sharp steering movements, such as aggressive lane changes or fast, jerky turns.

  • Losing control of the Kia K4 at high speeds significantly increases the risk of a vehicle rollover.

  • Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off the paved road surface and the driver oversteers to reenter the lane.

  • If your Kia K4 leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply. Instead, slow down gradually before carefully reentering the travel lanes. Abrupt steering maneuvers to reenter the road significantly increase the risk of losing vehicle control, resulting in serious injury or death.

  • Never exceed posted speed limits. Adjusted driving for road conditions is key to safety.

  • If your Kia K4 becomes stuck in snow, mud, or sand, you may cautiously attempt to "rock" the vehicle free by alternating between forward and backward gears. Do not attempt this if people or objects are near the vehicle, as it may suddenly lunge forward or backward once traction is regained, causing damage or injury.

  • Always buckle up! In the event of a collision, an unbelted occupant is significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed than an occupant who is properly restrained by the seatbelt system in their Kia K4.

  • Avoid high speeds when turning. Excessive speed during cornering can overwhelm the stability control systems of the Kia K4 and lead to a loss of vehicle control.

  • Do not make quick or erratic steering wheel movements, such as sharp lane changes or fast, aggressive turns. Such maneuvers can compromise the handling stability of your Kia K4.

  • Losing control of your Kia K4 at high speeds significantly increases the risk of a vehicle rollover, which can have catastrophic consequences.

  • Loss of control often occurs if two or more wheels drop off the paved road surface and the driver attempts to oversteer to reenter the roadway abruptly.

  • If your Kia K4 leaves the road, do not steer sharply to return. Instead, gently slow down before gradually and carefully reentering the travel lanes. Abrupt steering to reenter the road risks total loss of vehicle control, serious injury, and death.

  • Never exceed posted speed limits. Driving within these limits is critical for the safety of your Kia K4 and everyone else on the road.

  • If your Kia K4 becomes stuck in snow, mud, sand, or similar loose surfaces, you may attempt to "rock" the vehicle free by carefully alternating between forward and backward gears. Do not attempt this procedure if people, pets, or objects are anywhere near the vehicle. The Kia K4 may suddenly move forward or backward as it becomes unstuck, which could cause injury or damage to nearby surroundings.

  • Moving up a steep grade from a standing start

To safely begin moving your Kia K4 up a steep grade from a standing start, keep the brake pedal firmly engaged and perform the following actions:

    • Select the appropriate gear depending on the total vehicle load weight and the severity of the incline, then release the parking brake. Once you release the service brakes, engage the accelerator pedal gradually to ensure a smooth, controlled start in your Kia K4 without rolling backward.
