Kia EV6 gear position indicator and shift dial operation

The Kia EV6 instrument cluster displays the currently selected gear position whenever the EV button is in the DRIVE READY or POWER ON mode.

P (Park)

Always bring the Kia EV6 to a complete stop before shifting into P (Park).

To shift from R (Reverse), N (Neutral), or D (Drive) into P (Park), press the [P] button.

If the Kia EV6 is switched OFF while stationary, the transmission system automatically shifts into P (Park).

When the Kia EV6 is powered ON, the gear position automatically changes to P (Park) if the driver’s door is opened while the vehicle is in N (Neutral), R (Reverse), or D (Drive), and the following condition is met:

  • The Kia EV6 vehicle speed is below approximately 1 mph (2 km/h).

When the Kia EV6 is traveling above a certain speed, the gear will not shift into P (Park) even if the [P] button is pressed.

WARNING

  • Shifting the Kia EV6 into P (Park) while the vehicle is moving may result in loss of vehicle control.

  • After stopping the Kia EV6, always verify that the gear is in P (Park), apply the parking brake, and switch the vehicle OFF completely.

  • Do not rely on the P (Park) position alone in place of applying the Kia EV6 parking brake.

R (Reverse)

Select R (Reverse) to move the Kia EV6 backward.

To shift into R (Reverse), rotate the Kia EV6 shift dial to the R position while pressing the brake pedal.

CAUTION

Shifting

Always bring the Kia EV6 to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse). Shifting while the vehicle is moving may damage the electric drive system except in special driving situations specifically described in this manual.

N (Neutral)

To shift the Kia EV6 into N (Neutral) from P (Park), rotate the shift dial to the N position while depressing the brake pedal.

If the Electronic Parking Brake is applied, manually release the Kia EV6 parking brake while keeping the brake pedal depressed.

On Kia EV6 models equipped with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), the parking brake is not released automatically when shifting into N (Neutral).

CAUTION

Do not open the Kia EV6 driver’s door while the vehicle is moving through an automatic car wash tunnel. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle or car wash equipment.

For Kia EV6 vehicles equipped with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), the parking brake may automatically apply under certain conditions.

D (Drive)

D (Drive) is the standard forward driving position for the Kia EV6.

To shift into D (Drive), rotate the Kia EV6 shift dial to the D position while depressing the brake pedal.

Shift-lock system

The Kia EV6 shift-lock system prevents the gear from being shifted from P (Park) to N (Neutral), R (Reverse), or D (Drive), and also prevents shifting from N (Neutral) into R (Reverse) or D (Drive), unless the brake pedal is pressed.

NOTE

The Kia EV6 gear selector cannot be operated while the charging cable remains connected to the vehicle.

WARNING

Whenever parking the Kia EV6, always apply the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) even if the vehicle is already in P (Park).

When the battery (12V) is discharged

If the Kia EV6 12-volt battery becomes discharged, the gear position cannot be changed normally.

In this situation, perform a jump start procedure for the Kia EV6 or contact an authorized Kia dealer or qualified service center for assistance.

Parking

  1. Bring the Kia EV6 to a complete stop while continuing to press the brake pedal.

  2. Shift the vehicle into P (Park).

  3. Apply the parking brake securely.

  4. Press the EV button to switch the Kia EV6 into the OFF position.

  5. Take the Kia EV6 smart key with you whenever leaving the vehicle.
