Kia EV6: Emergency Stop (ES) / Emergency Stop operation

Contents:

Operating conditions

Emergency Stop is ready to operate when both Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist are active at the same time. In the Kia EV6, this function works together with these driver assistance systems to recognize a possible lack of driver response and to support safer vehicle control.

Emergency Stop forewarning

Emergency Stop determines that the driver may be unresponsive if the hands-off warning continues without a proper response. When the Kia EV6 judges that the driver is not responding, a warning message appears on the instrument cluster, an audible warning sounds, and the steering wheel vibrates as a clear forewarning.

Deceleration and steering control

If the driver remains unresponsive even after the previous warning, Emergency Stop controls steering assistance and braking to help stop the Kia EV6 within the current driving lane. During this process, the system informs the driver that Emergency Stop is operating by displaying a warning message, sounding an alert, and vibrating the steering wheel.

The forewarning and Emergency Stop operation are deactivated if any of the following conditions occur:

  • The driver takes control of the steering wheel.

  • Smart Cruise Control is temporarily disabled or switched off.

  • Lane Following Assist is turned off.

NOTE

  • While Emergency Stop is operating in the Kia EV6, the vehicle distance setting of Smart Cruise Control changes to Distance 4. After Emergency Stop is deactivated, the Smart Cruise Control distance setting returns to the last distance setting that was used before the function operated.

  • Emergency Stop is also ready to operate when Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist operate together, or when Highway Driving Assist is active.

  • For additional details about Smart Cruise Control, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control, Lane Following Assist, and Highway Driving Assist, refer to the sections for Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC), Lane Following Assist (LFA), and High Beam Assist (HBA). These systems support the Kia EV6 driver, but they do not remove the driver’s responsibility to remain alert.

After stopping

After your Kia EV6 has been brought to a stop by Emergency Stop, the following actions are performed to support safety and emergency response:

  • The doors are unlocked.

  • An SOS call is made, if the vehicle is equipped with this function.

  • The EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) is applied to help keep the vehicle stationary.

Deactivating Emergency Stop

If the function determines that the driver has responded and regained control, Emergency Stop is deactivated when one of the following conditions is met:

  • The driver controls the steering wheel.

  • The driver presses the accelerator pedal firmly and continuously.

  • The driver presses the brake pedal firmly.

  • The driver presses the Lane Driving Assist button (Kia EV6 Lane Driving Assist button icon).

  • The driver presses the Driving Assist button ( Kia EV6 Driving Assist button icon).

  • The driver presses the hazard warning flasher button after the Kia EV6 has stopped.

  • The front door is opened.

  • The driver cancels the SOS call, if the vehicle is equipped with this feature.

NOTE

After the Kia EV6 has stopped and Emergency Stop has been deactivated, the vehicle must be restarted to reactivate Lane Following Assist or Highway Driving Assist.
