Automatic release of Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)

The EPB system in the Kia EV6 can automatically release itself under the following operating conditions:

  • Shifter dial in P (Park)

With the Kia EV6 powered on, depress the brake pedal and shift from P (Park) into either R (Reverse) or D (Drive).

  • Shifter dial in N (Neutral)

With the vehicle running, depress the brake pedal and shift from N (Neutral) into either R (Reverse) or D (Drive).

  • Reducer

    1. Start the Kia EV6.

    2. Fasten the driver’s seatbelt securely.

    3. Ensure the driver’s door, hood, and liftgate are fully closed.

    4. Depress the accelerator pedal while the shifter dial is in R (Reverse) or D (Drive).

Always confirm that the Brake Warning Light turns OFF after the Electronic Parking Brake has been released.

WARNING

  • Never allow children, passengers, or animals to touch the Electronic Parking Brake controls in the Kia EV6.

  • Do not place objects near the Electronic Parking Brake switch, as unintended activation may occur.

NOTE

  • For additional safety, the EPB can still be applied even when the EV button is in the OFF position. However, it cannot be released until the system is powered on again.

  • When driving downhill or reversing the Kia EV6, always depress the brake pedal and manually release the parking brake using the EPB switch for maximum vehicle control.

CAUTION

  • If the parking brake warning light remains illuminated after the EPB has been released, have the Kia EV6 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer immediately.

  • Never drive the Kia EV6 with the EPB engaged, as this may cause accelerated brake pad and brake rotor wear.

  • Whenever parking or leaving the vehicle unattended, ensure the shifter dial is securely positioned in P (Park) and fully apply the parking brake. Use wheel blocks if necessary.

  • During winter conditions, the Electronic Parking Brake may freeze and fail to release. In extremely cold weather, avoid using the EPB whenever possible. Instead, shift the Kia EV6 into P (Park), block the wheels, and park on a flat and secure surface.

  • If the Electronic Parking Brake remains applied while driving, the brake system may overheat, brake lines may wear prematurely, and the EPB mechanism itself may become damaged.

  • If the auxiliary battery charge becomes insufficient, the Electronic Parking Brake may fail to apply or release correctly. In this situation, recharge or connect the auxiliary battery.

EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) may be automatically applied when:

  • The EPB system becomes overheated.

  • Another vehicle safety system requests automatic activation of the Electronic Parking Brake.

  • On Kia EV6 models equipped with EPB, the parking brake automatically engages when the shifter dial is moved into P (Park).

CAUTION

  • If you notice continuous noise, smoke, or a burning smell while using the EPB for emergency braking, have the Kia EV6 inspected by an authorized Kia service center immediately.

  • If the gear is shifted into N (Neutral) while the Electronic Parking Brake is active, the system will not release automatically. Failing to manually release the EPB before entering an automatic car wash tunnel may cause damage to the vehicle or the car wash equipment.

NOTE

On Kia EV6 vehicles equipped with the AUTO HOLD function, if the EV button is switched OFF while driving, the EPB will automatically engage. The AUTO HOLD function should be manually turned off before shutting down the vehicle.

System warning

The Electronic Parking Brake system in the Kia EV6 may display warning messages accompanied by audible alerts under certain operating conditions.

  • If you attempt to accelerate while the EPB remains applied and the system does not release automatically, a warning message and audible alert will activate.

  • If the driver’s seatbelt is not fastened or if the hood, driver’s door, or liftgate remains open, the Kia EV6 will display a warning message and emit an alert sound.

A: To release EPB, fasten seatbelt and close door, hood/liftgate

  • If a malfunction or abnormal operating condition is detected, an additional warning message and audible signal may appear.

If any of the above situations occur, depress the brake pedal and manually release the EPB by pressing the EPB switch.

WARNING

  • To prevent unintended vehicle movement when parked, never rely solely on the shifter dial. Always fully engage the parking brake and ensure the Kia EV6 is securely positioned in P (Park).

  • Never allow anyone unfamiliar with the Kia EV6 to operate the EPB switch. Accidental release of the parking brake may lead to severe injury or death.

  • All vehicles should always have the parking brake fully engaged while parked in order to prevent unexpected vehicle movement that may endanger occupants or pedestrians.

NOTE

  • Clicking sounds or electric motor noises may be heard while operating or releasing the EPB. These sounds are normal operating characteristics and indicate proper Electronic Parking Brake function in the Kia EV6.

  • If another driver uses the vehicle, ensure they fully understand proper operation of the Electronic Parking Brake system.

  • The EPB system may malfunction if the Kia EV6 is driven while the parking brake remains applied.

  • When automatically releasing the EPB using the accelerator pedal, always press the accelerator gradually and smoothly.

If the transition from AUTO HOLD to EPB does not function correctly, the Kia EV6 will emit an audible warning and display a system notification.

EPB malfunction indicator

This warning indicator appears when the EV button is switched to the DRIVE READY or POWER ON position and normally turns off within approximately 3 seconds if the Electronic Parking Brake system in the Kia EV6 is operating correctly.

Kia EV6 EPB malfunction indicator warning display

If the EPB malfunction indicator remains illuminated, activates while driving, or fails to illuminate when the EV button is placed in the DRIVE READY or POWER ON position, this may indicate a malfunction within the Electronic Parking Brake system of the Kia EV6.

In this situation, have the Kia EV6 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible to prevent further brake system complications.

The EPB malfunction indicator may also illuminate when the ESC warning indicator appears because of Electronic Stability Control issues. In such cases, this does not necessarily mean that the Electronic Parking Brake itself has failed.

The EPB warning light may additionally appear if the Electronic Parking Brake switch operates abnormally. Switch the vehicle off, wait several minutes, and restart the Kia EV6.

NOTE

Under normal conditions, the warning light should turn off and the EPB switch should resume proper operation. If the EPB warning light remains illuminated, have the Kia EV6 checked by an authorized Kia dealer immediately.

If the parking brake warning light does not illuminate, or flashes even though the EPB switch has been pulled upward, the Electronic Parking Brake may not have been fully applied.

If the parking brake warning light flashes while the EPB warning indicator remains on, press the EPB switch downward and then pull it upward again.

Return the switch to its original position and pull it upward once more. If the EPB warning indicator still does not turn off, have the Electronic Parking Brake system inspected by an authorized Kia service center.

Emergency Braking

If a problem occurs with the brake pedal while driving the Kia EV6, emergency braking can still be performed by pulling up and holding the EPB switch.

Emergency braking force is applied only while the EPB switch continues to be held upward.

WARNING

Never operate the Electronic Parking Brake while the Kia EV6 is moving unless it is absolutely necessary during an emergency situation. Activating the Electronic Parking Brake at normal driving speeds may result in sudden loss of vehicle control. If emergency braking is unavoidable, apply the EPB carefully and progressively.

NOTE

During emergency braking using the EPB, the parking brake warning light will illuminate to indicate that the emergency braking system is currently active.

If continuous noise, excessive heat, or a burning smell is detected after emergency braking with the EPB, have the Kia EV6 inspected by an authorized Kia dealer immediately.

When the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) is not released

If the Electronic Parking Brake does not release normally, transport the Kia EV6 using a flatbed tow truck and have the system professionally inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
