Kia Seltos: Maintenance / Emission control system
The emission control system of your Kia Seltos is covered by a written limited warranty. For detailed coverage information, refer to the Warranty & Consumer Information manual supplied with your vehicle.
Your Kia Seltos is equipped with an emission control system designed to meet all applicable emission regulations. The system helps reduce harmful emissions while supporting proper engine performance and fuel efficiency.
There are three main emission control systems:
-
Crankcase emission control system
-
Evaporative emission control system
-
Exhaust emission control system
To help ensure proper operation of these emission control systems, have your Kia Seltos inspected and maintained by an authorized Kia dealer according to the maintenance schedule in this manual.
Caution for the Inspection and Maintenance Test (With Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system)
-
To help prevent engine misfire or abnormal operation during dynamometer testing, turn ESC off by pressing the ESC switch.
-
After dynamometer testing is completed, turn ESC back on by pressing the ESC switch again.
1. Crankcase emission control system
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system helps prevent air pollution caused by blow-by gases escaping from the crankcase. This system supplies fresh, filtered air to the crankcase through the air intake hose.
Inside the crankcase, fresh air mixes with blow-by gases. The mixture then passes through the PCV valve and is routed into the induction system, where it can be burned during normal engine operation. This process helps the Kia Seltos reduce emissions and maintain cleaner engine operation.
2. Evaporative emission control (including Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR)) system
The evaporative emission control system is designed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The ORVR system helps capture vapors from the fuel tank during refueling and stores them in a canister instead of allowing them to vent into the air.
Canister
Fuel vapors generated inside the fuel tank are absorbed and stored in the onboard canister. When the engine is running, these stored vapors are drawn from the canister into the surge tank through the Purge Control Solenoid Valve.
Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV)
The PCSV is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). When the engine coolant temperature is low during idling, the PCSV remains closed so evaporated fuel is not introduced into the engine.
After the engine warms up during normal driving, the PCSV opens and allows fuel vapors to enter the engine for combustion. This helps improve emission control performance and supports efficient operation of the Kia Seltos fuel vapor management system.
3. Exhaust emission control system
The exhaust emission control system in the Kia Seltos is a highly effective system designed to control exhaust emissions while helping maintain good vehicle performance, drivability, and fuel efficiency.
Vehicle modifications
The Kia Seltos should not be modified. Any modification may affect vehicle performance, safety, durability, and emission compliance. It may also violate government safety or emissions regulations. Damage, malfunction, or performance problems caused by unauthorized modifications may not be covered under warranty.
-
Unauthorized electronic devices may cause abnormal vehicle operation, wiring damage, battery discharge, or fire. Do not use unauthorized electronic devices in your Kia Seltos.
Engine exhaust gas precautions (carbon monoxide) (CO)
-
Carbon monoxide may be present with other exhaust gases. If you smell exhaust fumes of any kind inside your Kia Seltos, have the vehicle inspected and repaired immediately. If you suspect exhaust fumes are entering the vehicle, drive only with all windows fully open and have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.
WARNING
Exhaust
Engine exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide (CO). Although CO is colorless and odorless, it is extremely dangerous and can be lethal if inhaled. Follow these precautions to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
-
Do not run the engine in confined or enclosed areas, such as garages, longer than necessary to move the vehicle in or out.
-
If the vehicle is stopped in an open area with the engine running for more than a short time, adjust the ventilation system to bring outside air into the cabin.
-
Never remain in a parked or stopped Kia Seltos for an extended period with the engine running.
-
If the engine stalls or fails to start, repeated restart attempts may damage the emission control system.
Operating precautions for catalytic converters
To protect the catalytic converter and the exhaust emission control system, keep the Kia Seltos properly maintained and avoid driving with engine misfires, severe hesitation, or abnormal exhaust odor. If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp appears or the vehicle runs poorly, have it inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
WARNING
Catalytic converter
Keep away from the catalytic converter and exhaust system while the Kia Seltos is running or immediately after the engine has been turned off. The exhaust system and catalytic converter become extremely hot and may cause serious burns.
WARNING
Fire
-
Do not park, idle, or drive the Kia Seltos over or near flammable materials such as dry grass, vegetation, paper, leaves, or similar objects. A hot exhaust system can ignite flammable items underneath the vehicle.
-
Do not remove the heat shield around the exhaust system. Do not seal the underside of the vehicle or apply improper corrosion-control coatings near the exhaust area. Under certain conditions, this may create a fire risk.
Your Kia Seltos is equipped with a catalytic converter as part of the emission control system.
The following precautions must be observed to protect the catalytic converter and maintain proper emission performance:
-
Use only unleaded fuel in gasoline engines.
-
Do not operate the vehicle if there are signs of engine malfunction, such as misfiring, rough running, or noticeable loss of performance.
-
Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Examples include coasting with the ignition off or descending steep grades while in gear with the ignition switched off.
-
Do not allow the engine to idle at high speed for extended periods of 5 minutes or longer.
-
Do not modify or tamper with any part of the engine or emission control system. All inspections and adjustments should be performed by an authorized Kia dealer.
-
Avoid driving with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of fuel may cause the engine to misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter.
Failure to follow these precautions may damage the catalytic converter and other related components in the Kia Seltos. Such damage may also affect emissions performance and could void warranty coverage.

Kia Seltos SP2 (2021-2026) Owner's Manual: Selecting a CRS
When selecting a Child Restraint System for your child, always choose a restraint that fits the child, fits the Kia Seltos seating position, and can be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the CRS has a label certifying that it meets FMVSS 213. Select a child restraint based on your child's height and weight.Kia Seltos SP2 (2021-2026) Owner's Manual: Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)
Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) in the Kia Seltos uses information from detected road signs and, when equipped, the navigation system to inform the driver of the current road speed limit and related information. ISLA helps the driver stay aware of posted limits and maintain a speed appropriate for the road. CAUTION ISLA may not operate properly if the function is used in countries or regions where the system data, road signs, or navigation information are not supported.
