Kia Seltos: What to do in an emergency / Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Contents:

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) in the Kia Seltos detects tire pressure and displays tire pressure information on the LCD display.

  2. Low tire pressure position telltale shown on the LCD display

Tire Pressure Indicator

  • You can check tire pressure in the Information (Kia Seltos TPMS information mode icon) mode on the cluster.

    • Refer to More Details.

  • Tire pressure is displayed approximately 1 to 2 minutes after driving begins.

  • If tire pressure is not displayed while the vehicle is stopped, the message "Drive to display" will appear. Drive the Kia Seltos for a short time, then check the tire pressure again.

  • You can change the tire pressure unit in the user settings mode on the cluster.

    • Available units include psi, kPa, and bar. Refer to More Details.

Kia Seltos TPMS notice about tire pressure changes and gauge differences

NOTICE

  • Tire pressure may change depending on parking conditions, driving style, temperature, road use, and altitude above sea level.

  • The tire pressure shown on the dashboard may differ slightly from the pressure measured with a tire pressure gauge.

Effective use of the TPMS

Kia Seltos effective TPMS use and tire pressure safety warning

WARNING

Over-inflation or under-inflation can reduce tire life, negatively affect Kia Seltos handling, and lead to sudden tire failure. This may cause loss of vehicle control and result in an accident.

Each tire, including the spare tire if provided, should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.

If your Kia Seltos has tires of a different size than the size shown on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, determine the correct inflation pressure for those tires.

As an added safety feature, your vehicle is equipped with TPMS, which turns on the low tire pressure telltale when one or more tires are significantly under-inflated. When the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, stop and check the tires as soon as possible, then inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and may lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency, shortens tire tread life, and may affect handling and stopping ability.

TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance. The driver is responsible for maintaining correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level required to activate the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.

Your Kia Seltos is also equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to show when the system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale flashes for approximately 1 minute and then remains continuously illuminated. This sequence continues at later vehicle startups as long as the malfunction remains. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated, TPMS may not detect or warn about low tire pressure correctly.

TPMS malfunctions may occur for several reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels that prevent the system from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels to confirm that the replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow TPMS to continue operating correctly.

Kia Seltos TPMS notice for system inspection by authorized Kia dealer

NOTICE

If any of the following occurs, have the TPMS checked by an authorized Kia dealer:

  1. The low tire pressure telltale / TPMS MIL does not appear for 3 seconds when the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to the ON position or when the engine is running.

  2. The TPMS MIL remains illuminated after blinking for approximately 1 minute.

  3. The low tire pressure position telltale remains illuminated.

Tire replacement with TPMS

If you have a flat tire, the Low Tire Pressure telltale will turn on. Have the flat tire repaired by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible, or replace the flat tire with the spare tire if necessary.

Kia Seltos tire replacement with TPMS caution for repair agents

CAUTION

Repair Agents

Never use a puncture-repairing agent that is not approved by Kia to repair or inflate a low-pressure tire. Sealant that is not approved by Kia may damage the tire pressure sensor.

Each wheel is equipped with a tire pressure sensor mounted inside the tire behind the valve stem. TPMS-specific wheels must be used. Always have tires serviced by an authorized Kia dealer to help protect the Kia Seltos TPMS components.

Even if the low-pressure tire is replaced with the spare tire, the Low Tire Pressure telltale will remain on until the low-pressure tire is repaired and installed back on the vehicle.

After replacing the low-pressure tire with the spare tire, the TPMS malfunction indicator may illuminate after a few minutes. This may happen because the TPMS sensor mounted on the spare wheel has not yet been activated.

Once the low-pressure tire is inflated to the recommended pressure and installed on the Kia Seltos, or once the TPMS sensor mounted on the replacement spare wheel is activated by an authorized Kia dealer, the TPMS malfunction indicator and low tire pressure telltale should turn off within a few minutes of driving.

If the indicator does not turn off after a few minutes of driving, visit an authorized Kia dealer for inspection.

If an original mounted tire is replaced with the spare tire, the TPMS sensor on the spare wheel should be activated and the TPMS sensor on the original wheel should be deactivated. If the TPMS sensor on the original wheel located in the spare tire carrier remains active, the TPMS may not operate properly. Have the tire with TPMS serviced or replaced by an authorized Kia dealer.

You may not be able to identify a low-pressure tire simply by looking at it. Always use a good-quality tire pressure gauge to measure tire inflation pressure. A hot tire, recently driven, will show a higher pressure reading than a cold tire.

Allow the tire to cool before measuring or adjusting the inflation pressure. Always make sure the tire is cold before inflating it to the recommended pressure.

A cold tire means the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours and has been driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) during that 3-hour period.

Never use tire sealant if your Kia Seltos is equipped with TPMS. Liquid sealant can damage the tire pressure sensors and may prevent the system from working correctly.

  • TPMS cannot warn you about severe and sudden tire damage caused by external objects such as nails, sharp debris, potholes, or road hazards.

  • If you feel any vehicle instability, immediately remove your foot from the accelerator, apply the brakes gradually with light pressure, and slowly move the Kia Seltos to a safe place off the road.
