Kia K4: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist operation / Evasive Steering Assist function:

The Evasive Steering Assist function is a cutting-edge safety feature within the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system of your Kia K4. Its primary purpose is to provide active steering support when emergency braking alone may be insufficient to avoid a collision. The core capability of this system is defined as "Emergency Steering."

When the system detects a collision risk with another vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, or motorcyclist in the path of your Kia K4, the Emergency Steering function alerts you. It utilizes a blinking Emergency steering warning light (Emergency steering warning icon on Kia K4), a visual warning message on the instrument cluster, an audible tone, and steering wheel vibration to grab your immediate attention. By providing subtle steering torque, the Kia K4 assists you in maneuvering away from the hazard to help prevent a collision.

This driver-assist function activates under the following condition:

Your Kia K4 driving speed: Approximately 25–53 mph (40–85 km/h).

In more complex traffic scenarios, if there is a risk of collision with a pedestrian, cyclist, or motorcyclist and you have already exceeded the threshold for standard Emergency Braking, the Evasive Steering Assist function can activate. This advanced layer of protection is engineered to provide the best possible chance to avoid an impact when your Kia K4 identifies an imminent threat. This specific assistance operates when your Kia K4 driving speed is approximately 40-47 mph (65-75 km/h).

CAUTION

  • During the operation of Evasive Steering Assist, the steering wheel may turn automatically; please be prepared for this automated movement.

  • Emergency Steering automatically concludes once the risk factors have been mitigated or eliminated. Always remain ready to adjust the steering wheel as the situation requires.

  • The system may deactivate if the steering wheel is held with excessive force or is steered manually in the opposite direction of the system's intended path.

  • To prioritize safety, Evasive steering assist will deactivate if the system detects that your evasive maneuver could lead to a potential collision with other nearby vehicles, motorcyclists, or pedestrians.

  • The feature may not operate if the Kia K4 calculates that there is insufficient lateral or forward space to safely avoid a collision.

  • Please note that detection performance for powered two-wheelers is reduced during nighttime driving; consequently, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system in your Kia K4 may experience temporary limitations or reduced functionality in low-light environments.

TIP

For more detailed information regarding the various warning messages generated by your Kia K4, please refer to the "Collision Warning" section in this manual.

WARNING

  • For your safety and to maintain focus on the road, always adjust system settings only after parking the Kia K4 at a safe and legal location.

  • The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system in your Kia K4 is a supplemental tool; it does not operate in all traffic situations and cannot prevent every potential collision.

  • The driver remains solely responsible for the safe control of the vehicle. Do not rely entirely on Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Always maintain a safe braking distance and be prepared to manually engage the brake pedal to reduce speed or bring your Kia K4 to a complete stop.

  • Never deliberately drive toward pedestrians, cyclists, or other objects to test the capabilities of the Kia K4 safety systems, as this may result in serious injury or fatal consequences.

  • Note that the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system may not trigger if it detects that the driver is already manually applying the brakes to avoid an obstacle.

  • Depending on specific road geometry, traffic density, and driving conditions, the Kia K4 may provide collision warnings later than expected or may fail to provide a warning entirely.

  • During automated FCA operation, the Kia K4 may perform sudden braking, which could cause loose objects inside the cabin to shift. Always ensure that all passengers are fastened with seat belts and that loose items are properly secured.

  • The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system may not display a visual warning or emit an audible alert if another vehicle function is currently generating a priority warning message or sound.

  • Be aware that you may not hear the audio alerts from your Kia K4 if the interior or exterior environment is excessively noisy.

  • Environmental factors and road conditions may cause the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system to deactivate, operate in an unintended manner, or experience performance inconsistencies.

  • Any emergency braking intervention initiated by the Kia K4 may automatically conclude if the system detects the driver performing a hard brake or a sharp steering maneuver.

CAUTION

  • External surroundings and visibility conditions can significantly affect the detection range and response time of the Kia K4 safety sensors, potentially leading to temporary system limitations.

  • To accurately assess risk, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system continuously monitors the direction, speed, and environmental context of oncoming vehicles.

  • FCA may not activate when the Kia K4 is traveling at high speeds or when there is a significant speed differential between your vehicle and oncoming traffic.

  • If the Kia K4 system detects that a collision with surrounding traffic is highly probable, advanced functions like Lane Change Oncoming, Lane Change Side, and Evasive Steering Assist are restricted to providing visual/audible warnings only, without performing active steering control.

TIP

  • When a collision is deemed imminent, the Kia K4 Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may engage brake assist to provide additional stopping power if it senses that your current braking input is insufficient.

  • Please note that visual elements, icons, or interface colors may appear differently on the Kia K4 instrument cluster depending on your selected display theme or vehicle trim specifications.

  • Regular maintenance of the front sensors and cameras is recommended to ensure your Kia K4 safety systems function as intended.
