Kia EV6: EV button / Starting the vehicle

WARNING

Never start the Kia EV6 while the accelerator pedal is depressed. The vehicle may move unexpectedly, which could result in a collision or serious injury.

  • The Kia EV6 can be started by pressing the EV button only when a registered smart key is detected inside the vehicle.

  • Even if the Kia EV6 smart key is inside the vehicle, starting may not be possible if the key is positioned too far from the driver or outside the detection range.

  • When the Kia EV6 is in the POWER ON or DRIVE READY mode and a door is opened, the system automatically checks for the presence of the smart key. If the smart key is not detected inside the Kia EV6, the indicator (Kia EV6 smart key warning indicator on instrument cluster) and a warning message appear on the instrument cluster.

After all Kia EV6 doors are closed, a warning chime sounds for approximately 5 seconds. Always keep the smart key inside the vehicle while the Kia EV6 is in the POWER ON or DRIVE READY state.

  1. Always carry the Kia EV6 smart key with you before attempting to start the vehicle.

  2. Ensure the parking brake is fully applied.

  3. Verify that the Kia EV6 shifter dial is positioned in P (Park).

  4. Firmly depress the brake pedal.

  5. Press the EV button. When the Kia EV6 starts successfully, the READY indicator illuminates on the instrument cluster.

NOTE

Always start the Kia EV6 with your foot firmly pressing the brake pedal. Do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the vehicle.

CAUTION

To help prevent damage to the Kia EV6:

  • If the READY indicator switches OFF while driving, do not attempt to move the Kia EV6 shifter dial directly into the P (Park) position.

If traffic and road conditions allow, shift the Kia EV6 into N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and press the EV button to attempt restarting the system.

  • Never push-start or tow-start the Kia EV6.

WARNING

Unintended Vehicle Movement

Never leave the Kia EV6 smart key inside the vehicle with children or passengers unfamiliar with vehicle operation.

Pressing the EV button while the smart key remains inside the Kia EV6 may cause unintended vehicle activation or unexpected vehicle movement.

If the Kia EV6 smart key battery becomes weak or the smart key does not operate correctly, the vehicle can still be started by pressing the smart key directly against the EV button.

Kia EV6 emergency smart key start procedure using EV button

The side of the Kia EV6 smart key containing the lock button should make direct contact with the EV button surface.

When pressing the Kia EV6 EV button using the smart key, hold the key at a right angle against the button for proper recognition.

If the Kia EV6 stop lamp fuse is blown, the vehicle cannot be started normally.

Replace the fuse with a new one whenever possible. If immediate fuse replacement is not possible, the Kia EV6 can still be started by pressing and holding the EV button for approximately 10 seconds while the system is in the OFF position.

In this emergency starting situation, the Kia EV6 may start without pressing the brake pedal. However, for maximum safety, always depress the brake pedal before starting the vehicle.

Do not press and hold the Kia EV6 EV button for longer than 10 seconds except when the stop lamp fuse has failed.

CAUTION

  • Do not repeatedly press the Kia EV6 EV button in rapid succession. Excessive operation may discharge the auxiliary battery or affect electrical system operation.

  • If the Kia EV6 does not start normally after several attempts, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer or qualified service center.

  • Avoid exposing the Kia EV6 smart key to strong magnetic fields, moisture, or extreme temperatures, as these conditions may interfere with smart key communication and starting performance.

TIP

For reliable Kia EV6 starting performance, keep the smart key battery in good condition and avoid storing the key near wireless transmitters, electronic devices, or metallic objects that may interfere with signal detection.

In an emergency while the Kia EV6 is moving, the vehicle can be switched OFF and placed into the POWER ON state by pressing and holding the EV button for more than 2 seconds, or by pressing the EV button three times repeatedly within 3 seconds.

If the Kia EV6 is still moving and you need to restart the vehicle after an emergency shutdown:

  • Press the EV button when the vehicle speed is above approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).

  • If the Kia EV6 is turned OFF while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift into P (Park). If traffic conditions and road conditions allow, shift the vehicle into N (Neutral) while it is still moving and press the EV button to attempt restarting the vehicle system.

  • Do not press and hold the Kia EV6 EV button for more than 10 seconds except when the stop lamp fuse is blown.

  • NOTE

    • If the Kia EV6 remains in the DRIVE READY or POWER ON state for an extended period without being driven or charged, the battery may gradually discharge.

    • If the EV button is pressed without pressing the brake pedal, the Kia EV6 will not start. Instead, the EV button operating mode changes as follows:

      • OFF > POWER ON > OFF

    • If the steering wheel does not unlock properly, the Kia EV6 EV button may not operate. While pressing the EV button, gently turn the steering wheel left and right to release steering lock tension.

    • The Kia EV6 can normally be switched completely OFF only when the vehicle is not moving.

If you enter the Kia EV6 with the smart key or Digital Key UWB (if equipped) while the Target Temperature function is operating, the vehicle may automatically switch to the DRIVE READY state for driving.

To enter the DRIVE READY state without a smart key or Digital Key UWB, place the NFC card or Digital Key device (if equipped) on the wireless charging pad. Then close the door or press the brake pedal.

If the smart key or digital key is not detected inside the Kia EV6 when the door is closed or the brake pedal is pressed, a related warning message appears.

After the Kia EV6 switches to DRIVE READY, use caution because the vehicle may move if the shift lever or shifter dial is moved from P (Park) to another position.

    • If the Kia EV6 smart key battery is weak or the smart key does not operate correctly, the vehicle can be started by pressing the EV button directly with the smart key.

When using this emergency smart key start method, hold the smart key at a right angle so it contacts the EV button properly.

    • If the Kia EV6 stop lamp fuse is blown, the vehicle cannot be started using the normal starting procedure.

Replace the fuse with a new one as soon as possible. If replacement is not immediately possible, the Kia EV6 may be started by pressing and holding the EV button for approximately 10 seconds while the vehicle is in the OFF position.

In this emergency condition, the vehicle may start without pressing the brake pedal. However, for safety, always press the brake pedal before starting the Kia EV6 whenever possible.

    • For reliable Kia EV6 operation, keep the smart key battery in good condition and avoid placing the smart key near strong electronic devices, metallic objects, or wireless transmitters that may interfere with signal detection.
